Discussion thread for Wood Photo Challenge

There are already some fantastic images being put up. I think this week might be as good as the rust one was.

Re: Discussion thread for Wood Photo Challenge

I'm sure losing that tree was very heart-breaking.

Oak trees are protected in California. My neighbor has a huge oak tree in her yard, which extends into my yard, and over my 2 story roof.

We are not allowed to trim any branch that has a diameter of about 3cm or more.

It is over 50 years old, and very beautiful. I get very emotional when old trees are cut down.

Re: Discussion thread for Wood Photo Challenge

We can't cut down any tree (on own property) here (NSW), unless the Local Council give permission (which they rarely do).

Which is good in most respects, except some ordinary trees have grown far too big for a house yard or council nature strip. They can be dangerous also near houses..big branches breaking off in storms.

Re: Discussion thread for Wood Photo Challenge

and yet the mining mobs can come in and bulldoze forests :-(.

They say they will relocate all the koalas first, but that doesn't help the birds or lizards.  It can take a hundred or more years for a tree to get to the point where it has nesting holes for parrots and marsupials.

Some bright spark has planted a gum tree next to my house. It's only a young tree, but it's going to cause problems down the track. I think it's probably still small enough that I could take it down without council approval but the koalas often come and visit it. So it stays.

Re: Discussion thread for Wood Photo Challenge

pimpy - I saw your wooden squirrel picture on the photo thread.

I have an inlaid wood picture also (Marquetry?). It is of Sorrento, Italy and I bought it there about 30 yrs ago.

It has a very glossy finish, hard to get a good photo.

I have a simple one too and it came from Zimbabwe.  I have never been there but it was a gift.  My cousin lives there.
