Getting disqualified from the tournament is the by the book punishment. No more or less.

He apolgised and I think he was sincerley sorry.

"Djokovic did not speak to the press after the match, but released a statement on Instagram soon after, apologising again.

"This whole situation has left me really sad and empty," Djokovic said.

"I checked on the linesperson and the tournament told me that thank God she is feeling ok. I'm extremely sorry to have caused her such stress. So unintended. So wrong.

"As for the disqualification, I need to go back within and work on my disappointment and turn this all into a lesson for my growth and evolution as a player and human being.

"I apologise to the US Open tournament and everyone associated for my behaviour. I'm very grateful to my team and family for being my rock support, and my fans for always being there with me. Thank you and I'm so sorry."

Players like need to quit playing up to the media with their tantrums on court and just deliver a good game.

Who would be? At least he had the decency to be ashamed, and aplogise for his actions instead of playing the smart- rrrs like some others.

Regarding line judges is not their job to keep their eyes on the ball and so expected to duck , grin and bare the affront of such an incident with good grace - however if the national culture is of a precious nature.... i can quite well understand the ruling.

Not sure whether a bowler in cricket would have suffered censure for similar.

If a bowler drilled the cricket ball at the umpire and hit him in the throat, the bowler would be out for life.

Was clearly unintentional - unless Djokovic has eyes at the back of his head - just trying to think of a comparable case in cricket - just for interest sake , i mean tennis rules are tennis rules , i am not disputing the ruling
