Religious thing?
Religion being what it is today I would not think anyone would bother fasting, could be wrong?

Yes, and that is what Lent is about. From personal experience, cant agree with you that majority of people do not understand what it is about.
I disagree. Most people haven't the foggiest.
I dont agree with you that traditions have no value in our society either. Sadly, a lot of traditions are being lost. We should try to preserve the ones we have left and that includes both cultural and religious.
Where did I say that traditions have no value in society? ?:|
What I said was that eating meat these days has more to do with tradition. But like fasting, it seems pointless to follow a tradition blindly with out understanding it's meaning. And it is even crazier to follow traditions that have point in todays society.
If you want to sacrifice something for Lent, then surely it would make more sense to sacrifice something of more value than meat?
Most of the more ridiculous traditions in our society have quite rightly gone by the by. For some reason we hang on to the religious ones more than others.
Where I come from, Christmas Eve has a very strong tradition. It involves not eating meat (plus many other rituals) You may think that tradition has no value, I strongly disagree. It is what makes that culuture unique and 'rich'.
So then not eating meat is a cultural tradition rather than a religious one?

Does anyone even remember the original date he died on before it kept moving?
Now you are asking the 64 billion dollar question :^O
Apparently, and according to the scriptures themselves, it never really happened at all.
The reasoning far better students of this sort of thing than I will ever be put forward for it not having taken place is all in the various chapters of the bible.
The times of day seem to be the sticky point because they conflict with the laws of the day and nature.
I could quote you a tinne of material on the subject but won't bother for two good reasons.
1. It would most bore everyone to tears here.
2. There are limits to how much time I have on my hands to spend here, and there just isn't enough space for it all 😉
However, if you'd like to read some of the arugements put forth on the topic go here:

I disagree. Most people haven't the foggiest.
How many people have you surveyed ?
What I said was that eating meat these days has more to do with tradition.
So what if it is purely because of tradition? Most people are aware of how it originated.
But like fasting, it seems pointless to follow a tradition blindly with out understanding it's meaning.
I agree with you that it is important to understand the origins of the traditions we follow.
If you want to sacrifice something for Lent, then surely it would make more sense to sacrifice something of more value than meat?
Lent is not about sacrificing meat though. It is something extra that people observe on Good Friday or every Friday during Lent. So what if it is just symbolic to some? Fish is a symbol of Christ. It is the only kind of flesh to be eaten on Good Friday.
So then not eating meat is a cultural tradition rather than a religious one?
Would that make a difference?

The period of 40 days for Lent is supposed to be all about FASTING, not anything else.
Generally fasting is considered to be the abstaining from intaking ALL foods during the hours between sunrise and sunset in all religions that practise it at any time.
Only the intake of water is okay during those hours.
Even though I observe no religious connections I'd have no problem with fasting in such a manner because I only eat the one good meal per day without snacking in between, and that's always after sunset, but not deliberately so. It just always works out that way by the time I've finished stuffing around without everything else that makes up my waking hours.
I'm told my eating habits are not good for me, but they ain't killed me yet :^O

Good one Meep, but now tell me what Jesus Chirst ACTUAL birth date was.
Do that and I'll consider you to be a fantastic researcher B-)
Can you also tell me exactly what time he died? Or at least was the time of death before or after dark as one bible passge tells that it was after dark:
"Darkness was over the land Lk.23:44"
That's not as dumb a question as it may sound to you, and I'm not taking the P either, just clarifying one or two things I've been reading up on about the subject today.

They have differing names for the same sort of thing, periods of fasting, Ramadan for example.
Lent is the Christian name for the period practise is all.
