Do you object to BAG INSPECTIONS at stores?

Do you object to staff asking to inspect your bag? (they are only doing their job)

Will you shop at a  store that asks to inspect your bag or will you go elsewhere?

Do bag inspections and security checks help to stop shop lifting and keep prices down?

If you object WHY?

Do you think that objecting to a bag inspection makes a person look guilty or they are guilty?

Rememer that its a condition of entry at just about every major /medium/small store in Australia

I know the staff do not have the right to search, but I would rather let them peek in any bags (if asked politely) than be asked to wait until they have the cops in.

That said, I've never been asked, but expect to be asked every time at Woolies now I've said this ๐Ÿ™‚

They are probably more likely to push the point if they suspect you have actually stolen something. I once had a security staff at Target follow me out of the store and ask to check my trolley, unbeknowns to me my handbag had fallen across a video (yes it was a while ago) that I had picked up for my son and I forgot about it when I went through checkout. I assume one of the staff noticed it and alerted security to stop me. It was rather embarrassing and I wish the checkout chick had mentioned it to me while I was still in there, wouldnt have been so embarrassing then. The same security man is still on the door at that Target and I blush a little every time I see him Smiley Embarassed

I cant remember anyone ever asking to check my handbag, but I automatically open shopping bags for staff to check. I think its less stress on the staff if they dont have to ask you.

Well that is as humiliating as it gets, I feel the same way if someone looks in my bag, my children are not allowed to go to my purse.

i was going to suggest he put his hands in my trousers and see how that went down. but he was already feeling a bit sorry for himself.

Punch...the girls in my local Coles are terrified to ask, one girl was beaten up after her shift for catching the thieves! Now they are told to alert security!
My Coles has a code they use over the PA system to alert the guard and tell him which Isle to go to. My ears prick every time I hear it!

If you don't allow them to look I believe they can request you go with them to an office and the police will be called to compel you to reveal what's in your bag. What's the big deal? In my bag I have... 1 purse, 1 mobile phone, 1 set of car keys, 4 old recites, 1 packet of gum, 1 lipstick, a small roll on deodorant and a hair brush.

they have no special powers, they could make a citizens arrest but that would get the company sued for unlawful detention (false imprisonment ) and a number of other things for many tens of thounsands of $$ when they found nothing.

Do you know of any cases that that has happened in Australia?

Re: Do you object to BAG INSPECTIONS at stores

There are heaps of things that a person could steal and slip into a handbag. Some handbags are huge.

Shop lifting is a giant problem, not something trivial, that stores should have to cope with.. requesting people to open their bags is not unreasonable.

Besides that there are lots of people out shopping in these stores that say they have a bag check policy, so obviously the majority of the general public don't mind. If they did, these stores would be empty most of the time.

I went into a Kmart one day, I had some Darrell Leas chocs Ifrom their store) in my shopping bag. The door person asked to see the receipt for the chocs which was in my handbag. That was a bit silly as K mart do not sell Darrell Lea chocs.
