Does Anyone know what this is??

My cousin's mother-in-law passed away recently and this "instrument" was hers but no-one in the family knows what it is.  It is shaped like a pen, solid and has no moving parts.

She was a religious lady, other than that there are no clues.  Would love to know what it is used for.

I've seen little old ladies use pointers , they were younger at the time of course .

can,'t be,the one pictured in the OP shows no sign of opening at the bottom,and OP says no moving parts? but i'm wondering about the slide,and if the top could pop open...

I think I saw Patrick Demsey use one in Grey's Anatomy.  

Looking at him made my pupils dilate.
