NSW fires see more than 850,000 hectares destroyed so far in season 'as bad as it gets'

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-11-11/nsw-bushfires-850000-hectares-destroyed-worst-to-come/1169103...

many years ago after a monumentally bad fire a inquiry was formed to see what our leaders should do in order to be better prepared if the same situation should happen again.

like the puchasing of the canadian super tanker fire fighting planes.

of couse they were expensive but if each state was to purchase 1 then come a day like we are predicting now these planes would all be available to be deployed as a mega fire fighting group.

but no, we were told we dont need them, we can do better with out them.

and anyway, these big fires dont happen very often.

well well well, looks to me like the eastern states are in for fires, big fires, nearly every year!

i just heard on radio where if your considered in a fire prone area (thats just about everyone these days) you can forget insurance cover.

oh, and done mention 'climate change' to the govt, its still a load of you know what to scomo and co.

I breed a few rams for station clients and one of these customers was burnt out by the Sampson Flat fire a couple of years ago. He lost his farm machinery, sheds, fences and a lot of livestock, but his house survived.

Not because of any fire fighting efforts, but because it was on the lee side of a line of tall, thick  pine trees. Apparently the fire was moving so fast that it hit the pines and just blew over the top of them, sparing his house on the other side. I wouldn't recommend pine trees as a fire retardant hedge, but it was an interesting observation.

Bushfire appeal launched to help children with disabilities recover sensory toys

this disaster is going to take so much more than scomo and co are offering to fix.

it may well bankrupt the nation if volunteers get weary and go home.

if the various govts had to pay for everything that needs doing the cost would be astronomical.

i have watched videos made by fire departments showing homes (created for the demonstration) exploding into fire just becaise the temp got so high it caused combustion when there was no actual fire.

i read one home owner in the fires just a week ago i think say they witnessed their homes windows explode out from the internal heat build up before the fire reached the house.

they were on the other side to the oncomming fire front getting into cars to get out when suddenly boom, windows just blew out!

There are a number of ways that a house can be destroyed in a bushfire and that's why I only posted about ember attacks which destroy homes..stubborn_smiley_by_mirz123-d4bt0te_zps12f1a5a3.gif

i wasnt trying to say your comments were wrong

just adding you dont need embers or actual burning stuff to light a house on fire, just plain high temp will do it too.

Not a problem. good.gif

There used to be a warning that if a fire was approaching and even if you were leaving put wet rags in the gutters

to prevent ember attacks but that was stopped as those rags dried out and caught fire if the fire got close enough.

I've driven through the Adelaide Hills a number of times and if you go through the smaller out of the way place

via the back roads you will see hardly any fire reduction at all.

One year during summer there was a few houses surrounded by dried out grass/weeds that was over 2 foot high

and if that caught fir everything there would've gone.

We used to deliver furniture in the Hills and where they allowed people to build was mind bogling at times as any

mistake and you could end up down the bottom of a cliff or a fire could quickly cut of your escape route.good.gif

RSPCA receives 13,500 offers to volunteer on Kangaroo Island following bushfire crisis

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-01-29/rspca-inundated-with-requests-to-help-kangaroo-island-animals...

just a few years back there was a huge debate about the over population of koalas on kangaroo island

many 'experts' wanted a cull to reduce numbers.

the labor govt figured corectly shooting the koalas was political suicide

they introduced mass desexing

now we are going to spend millions on saving koalas on kangaroo island

(and rightly so)

good thing we didnt just blast them out of the trees hey?

btw, the Libs from memory said desexing was too expensive an option!

Nature is so good at responding to bushfires

within a short time trees that looked dead show signs of life, seedlings start popping up, grass starts growing from the ashes.

sadly dead animals cant do the same.

Blasting them out of trees would have been more humane than having them burnt to death.
