What did he expect? He expected to be treated with dignity and respect, just like any other person.
That's exactly how he should have been treated, with dignity and respect. Anyone who thinks that that is not an expectation for a human being, heterosexual or homosexual, needs to think about their own deservedness, regardless of sexuality, to be respected for what they are!
