Fine. Then why find it worthy of stating it to a congregation? Sexual orientation should be the last thing on your mind.

Do you state your shopping list and bills to be paid to your congregation?

Did you know you were heterosexual before you had your first sexual experience?

Do you imagine that in order to remain celibate you have to be (mentally if not physically) a eunuch?

Well you know Icy, by your reasoning and argument, there is still a possibility that you might be gay without the benefit of having had a gay relationship. Why not bring it to the congregation. Would have gone un-noticed probably if he said in elsewhere and who knows the  back story that made him mention it - maybe it wasn't as out of the blue as we might think.

Perhaps because an openly gay priest is in a unique position to help homosexual parishioners with issues peculiar to them, just as a heterosexual priest is probably better placed to advice heterosexuals on marriage etc.
