Three months later another payment was debited from the account so I fired off another letter requesting the return of the premium. This went on for 3 payments, despite letters and phone calls. The bank could not/would not help as they said we had signed a direct debit authority that could only be cancelled by the company.
What the bank told you is no longer true. That is what they told me and I said this is my money and if you continue to allow these payments to come out I will close my account and go to another bank.
5 mins and the direct debit was cancelled by the bank

e harmony are a shonkey company
.
Look at their TV ads .... by "members" ... might be "members" but professional actors
.
Just a shonkey company preying on the weak/lonely/gullible/ people seeking a friend etc and use a loophole to continue to take peoples' money
.
Senior Dating Agency/Dating Agency use this same "auto renew" system ... you sign up for a trial ... you do not want to continue ... .
.
yet they continue to take your money from your Bank account
.
And you have to jump through hoops to stop it
.
SHONKEY

Yes, I am aware that it is not longer true but as I said, it was many years ago and direct debits were in their infancy. If I remember correctly it was also before ATMs and cheques were still the most accepted form of paying your bills.
I was very wary of direct debits for many years after that....I never used them voluntarily, only when it was a case of pay that way or not deal with that company.
To this day I have one bank account that I deposit the money in the day before a debit is due to come out and check it the next day to see that they have not double dipped...had that happen once too.
