Thanks to a thread like this one I read when I first came the net I look for that box to check NOT to renew as soon as I sign up.
I did that with my virus protection service and when the year was up they sent me a 50% coupon to sign up again, so that worked out great.
the bank has been contacted and the relevant account closed....thankfullyits only $80 loss
let them try and enforce this unfair 'contract'.
They will. They will send it to a collection agency and it will appear on your credit report lowering your credit score....for 7 years I think. If you're not going to be applying for a loan, credit card, etc, you might not care. Otherwise I'd be calling them now to cancel it and letting them know the card it was on is no longer active. Speak to a manager.
I'm surprised there isn't a law against it. Maybe there will be....after they've "stolen" millions.

Same thing occurs with unions
Subbies and tradiies-even for a few days work need to join 1 or more unions
to enter a work site.
The yearly subscription is paid and forgotten about.
No contact is made til 5 years later and the heavies turn up on the doorstep
demanding 5 years worth of payments for union dues-because the person failed to resign from the union.
Ths has happened and still happens..................................Richo.

not the same thing though is it? no money would be owed if it was coming out of an account. it's an easy process to resign from a union, only takes a phone call. I have never heard of anyone paying a year in advance, union dues come out fortnightly or weekly as you get paid, it has been this way for some years now.

Hi Horizon,
I don't do facebook but it would be nice to have a National or even International site run by members to list ethical and non ethical concerns. I know it's a little idealistic but it may clean up the world a little.
And you are right, I am beginning to have the bleeps with the ones that have skipped the queue and don't know the right ways before they get involved in starting a family, careers, business, migrating, etc. Too many trying to take shortcuts IMO.
Companies that rort the system by continually restarting concerns for primarily their own interests instead of providing something to benefit the future need to be held accountable and can be, by the very system they use to manipulate.
It often begins with a mere idea.

Happened to me too, with my union. I wrote them a very nasty letter, telling them that I had resigned, in writing, and that I couldn't be held responsible for their slack records
staff.
In actual fact, I had forgotten to resign, but I dummied up a photocopy of my
'resignation' that I had sent them.
Never heard another thing. Hahaha

Sometimes drastic action is required to get results.
Many years ago my OH had an Income Protection Policy with a company in Brisbane (we are in Sydney) and had quarterly premiums taken out of his bank account. We were not very happy with the company...they were erratic with their debits and not easy to contact.
At the end of the year we sent them a letter requestion to end the policy.
Three months later another payment was debited from the account so I fired off another letter requesting the return of the premium. This went on for 3 payments, despite letters and phone calls. The bank could not/would not help as they said we had signed a direct debit authority that could only be cancelled by the company.
In desperation I sent a letter requesting the forms to make a claim on the policy. By return mail I received a furious letter telling me that the policy had been cancelled 9 months ago and by asking for these forms I was committing insurance fraud...blah, blah, blah and they would be taking action against me.
I replied promptly thanking them for the confirming in writing what I already knew....the policy had been cancelled on xxx date.
I further suggested that it was also fraud to continue to take premiums for a policy that they were not prepared to honour but I would not be taking the matter further as long as the fraudulently aquired payments were returned to our account forthwith.
The full amount was in the account within 3 days. even before the letter of apology arrived.
