Eddie McGuire forced to apologise after mocking double amputee Cynthia Banham's SCG coin toss

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-03-30/eddie-mcguire-afl-coin-toss-comments-slammed/10955820?section...

its been a week for people in public positions saying stupid things.

eddie is quite good at putting his feet in his mouth.

this was not the coin toss to make any statements about beyond 'great coin toss'

if he didnt know she was disabled then he should have, but if the powers to be give the coin to a unknown person dont 'have a go' if they fluff it. doesnt matter if they are disabled or not.

pull ya head in eddie, a coin toss isnt judged on. there are no bonus points for a perfect toss.

at least she did better than that silly 'bat toss' they did with the big bash games.

I find it outrageous that a lot of high profile people assume that an apology exonerates

them from their actions or behaviour, and is often accepted.

We hear, see or read about it regularly.

Totally agree Trav, the damage has already be done and an  apology cant undo the hurt

He's an idiot (Eddie) but I saw footage of his commentary, and I believe it was uninintentional.

A case of foot in mouth, which he is known for.

Blown out of proportion though.

its all in the timing, saying it if say some 'celebrity' was doing the 'toss' and screwed it up is one thing but saying it after a disabled person does their best at tossing a coin shows a lack of thought.

eddie has a history of saying things at the wrong time without thinking it through.

then making a half a*sed effort at an opoligy

He's not just a celebrity though is he?

He's a club President.

The AFL should censure him.

I kind of agree, but I sometimes think we excuse people because it's 'not that bad' or 'could have been worse'. Personally, I don't care all that much who the comment is directed at. I think it narrows down to whether the comment was intended to be nasty, a poor choice of humour, or genuinely unintentional. While some celebrities are little more than d*ckheads and should keep their mouths shut, I think others should be given the benefit of the doubt if it was unintentional. BTW I am not referring to Eddie - he is a serial offender and should know better.

what i ment was IF the person out on the ground fliiping the coin was some ex contestant on big brother or a cooking show (a minor celebrity) and they screwed it up then what he said wouldnt be a big deal.

its the fact he chose to say it after someone with a disability threw the coin that made it a front page story.

no thought process about who it was he was having a go at.

Not excusing Eddie's  remarks at all but it is really a stretch to somehow link the woman's disability to how she tosses a coin.....she does not toss the coin with her legs.

I would be more offended at people drawing attention to my disability if I was her.
