Empty nesters

Now that we are empty nesters, and have been for over a year, I thought that it was time that I transformed the vacant rooms. One room will become my studio while the other room will become the guest room. I was wondering what other empty nesters have done with their kids' old rooms.

Re: Empty nesters

If mine were at home until they saved enough money for their own homes, neither of them would have left until the year 2034.LOL Properties are expensive and unless you are on a high wage is out of reach for most young people - and the not so young. There is a rental shortage and the rents are high. Mine paid board.

I have a friend who is close to be 60 and she has never left home. It works well for her and her mum.

I am so impressed that you waited a year, bluecat*dancing. I was in measuring rooms while they were still packing. 😄

LOL Don't worry, EM, I have been planning and planning since they moved out but I kept getting in my own way.  But, now is the time. Hopefully, I won't lose momentum......

Re: Empty nesters

OH and I were in our 40's when we bought our first home, can't imagine living with parents unitl then LOL.

We couldn't have afforded to buy one before then and it's probably like that for people today.  I think it comes down to priorities and not wanting what you can't afford.

I thought today was Sunday.....enjoy your Saturday even if you're doing Sunday type things because like me, your mind doesn't work too well before coffee !

I'm off to do "stuff" in MY room hahaa!

Have fun in your room Soul:womanvery-happy

In today's world the cost of rent uses up much more of the weekly wage than it did years ago. Young people (even sharing accom) have to pay a high rent and that means not much left over to save. If the young person is still able to live at home when they are working full time, and pay board (their share of the expenses) they would still be able to save.

The rent for 2brm apt in Sydney CBD is near $600 p.w.

The avg rent for a 3brm house where I live is $450 (nothing flash, just an avg 3 brm house). Near the same price for a 2brm unit here as well as most of them are new.

My daughter has done the same, gap year and 5+ years at Uni.. she will be 24.5yo when she graduates.

She recently said she could live at home forever!

LOL I was sure it was Sunday, too, and regretted not being up to going to the March in March in Melb.
