Nolan Porter, known and loved as a figurehead of Northern Soul via his song “Keep On Keeping On,” has died at the age of 71. The native of Los Angeles made some prominent recordings in the 1970s, when he had three, albeit modest, entries in the Top 40 of the Billboard soul chart.

One of those singles, 1971’s funky “Keep On Keeping On” (credited as N.F. Porter), was a particular favorite in soul clubs in the north of England. It won further admiration when its guitar riff was quoted in Joy Division’s 1978 track “Interzone.” The soon-to-be hugely influential Manchester band had previously recorded the Porter song itself, when they were known as Warsaw.

Nolan was born in Los Angeles on May 10, 1949, and made early recordings for producer Gabriel Mekler’s Lizard label. On that imprint, billed as Nolan, he reached No.40 on the R&B survey in 1971 with “I Love What You Give.” The aforementioned “Keep On Keeping On” then peaked at No.39 in early 1972, before a subsequent deal with ABC Records helped “If I Could Only Be Sure” climb to No.29 R&B in 1973. He also recorded as Frederick II.

RIP Danny Ray, the ultimate MC.

I loved hearing his voice, building up the excitement until James Brown made his entry.

Danny Ray (1935–2021), James Brown’s longtime emcee and cape man

Home > News & Advice > News Obituaries > Danny Ray (1935–2021), James Brown’s longtime emcee and cape man

Danny Ray was James Brown’s (1933–2006) longtime personal valet and emcee, who became an integral part of the singer’s stage show as his “cape man.”

  • Died: February 2, 2021
  • Details of death: Died of natural causes at the age of 85

Cape man

Ray and Brown met in 1960, and Brown hired ray to serve as his personal valet. Ray soon became the emcee for Brown’s stage show, introducing the singer at the beginning of each show as his band played energetic intro music to hype up the crowd. One of the most iconic moments of Brown’s stage show came when he performed “Please Please Please.” Apparently overcome with emotion and exhaustion, Brown would drop to his knees as he sang. Ray was always close by, ready to rush to Brown’s side to drape a cape over his shoulders, comforting him and helping him offstage. But before they could go far, Brown would throw the cape from his shoulders and return to sing, as Ray collected the cape and stood by in case of a repeat bout of emotion.

Sad news, Les McKeown of The Bay City Rollers passes away. Never been a fan of the group but didn't dislike them either. Looking back years later and in comparison to what is pushed out now, their stuff was quite good. I knew girls that were crazy about them. I always thought that  Les was the least teeny bopper-like of them.

Farewell to "Mr Personality" Lloyd Price. What a great guy he was too. I recall seeing a 45 at home when I was a young fella. And with personality, he had buckets of it.

Lloyd Price, Singer And Early Rock Influence, Dies At 88

May 9, 2021

NEW YORK (AP) — Singer-songwriter Lloyd Price, an early rock 'n roll star and enduring maverick whose hits included such up-tempo favorites as "Lawdy Miss Clawdy," "Personality" and the semi-forbidden "Stagger Lee," has died. He was 88.

Price died Monday at a long-term care facility in New Rochelle, New York, of complications from diabetes, his wife, Jacqueline Price, told The Associated Press on Saturday.

Lloyd Price, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, was among the last survivors of a post-World War II scene in New Orleans that anticipated the shifts in popular music and culture leading to the rise of rock in the mid-1950s. Along with Fats Domino and David Bartholomew among others, Price fashioned a deep, exuberant sound around the brass and swing of New Orleans jazz and blues that placed high on R&B charts and eventually crossed over to white audiences.

Olympia Dukakis, Oscar-winning Moonstruck actor, dies aged 89
Posted Sunday 2 May 2021 at 7:28am

Olympia Dukakis, the veteran stage and screen actor whose flair for maternal roles helped her win an Oscar as Cher's mother in the romantic comedy Moonstruck, has died aged 89.

Key points:

Dukakis yearned to be an actor from an early age
She won the 1988 Oscar for best supporting actress and Cher took home the trophy for best actress
The same year Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis, her cousin, was the Democratic Party's presidential nominee

Dukakis died on Saturday morning (local time) in her home in New York City, according to her agent.

A cause of death was not immediately released.

Dukakis won her Oscar through a surprising chain of circumstances, beginning with author Nora Ephron's recommendation that she play Meryl Streep's mother in the film version of Ephron's book Heartburn.

Dukakis got the role, but her scenes were cut from the film.

To make it up to her, director Mike Nichols cast her in his hit play Social Security.

Director Norman Jewison saw her in that role and cast her in Moonstruck.

Dukakis won the Oscar for best supporting actress and Cher took home the trophy for best actress.

She referred to her 1988 win as the year of the Dukakii because it was also the year Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis, her cousin, was the Democratic Party's presidential nominee.
