A good idea for a topic; I can’t add anything here as it would derail this thread and I know I’d be posting a scroller…

Grace Bumbry, the globally acclaimed mezzo-soprano who could also take on some of the powerful soprano roles for lyrico-spinto / dramatic voices, has died aged 86.

She had suffered a stroke last year.

She rose above racism that saw her denied entry into the St Louis Institute of Music, even though she won the prize of entry. She triumphed even over the uproar caused when she was cast as Venus in Wagner’s Tannhäuser in the Bayreuth Festival in 1961.

A truly great voice… a formidable personality…

Andy Rourke, bassist for The Smiths, has died. He was 59.

Rourke’s death was announced today (May 19) by former bandmate Johnny Marr on social media. Per Marr’s statement, Rourke died following “a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer”.

Marr also paid tribute to his former bandmate, writing: “Andy will be remembered as a kind and beautiful soul by those who knew him and as a supremely gifted musician by music fans.”

Not sure if it's worthy of a mention, but Rolf Harris dead aged 93. Apparently it happened around 3 weeks ago, but only announced last night our time. His family kept it quiet so they could have a quiet funeral without a media circus. Can't say I blame them.

Worth mentioning, even with the awful facts about his disgusting behaviour. He was talented, and I wish he’d never gone down that dark path…

I agree. As a kid, I loved watching him perform. He always gave me a laugh. As an adult, I really appreciated some of his artwork. Sadly, because of his behaviour, those artworks may never be seen again. That in itself is sad, because he was a very talented man.

Definately worth mentioning! There is so much horror on the news, it's nice to hear the world just got a little safer/ cleaner. I can totally understand the family keeping quiet until after the funeral. People are so aggressively vitriolic these days and they deserve the right to say goodbye without being attacked.

There are so many enormously gifted people who have done terrible things, or — worse — have a skewed moral compass that allows them to continually have hideous behaviours. I hope I’m able to separate the genius or talent from the person; I don’t think there’s any alternative if art, athletic events, music, intellectual prowess, poetry, writing, dance etc are to have any purpose and meaning. But that never ever causes the behaviour. It’s a dilemma.
