I saw your post on the thread about christmas thread but didn't want to hijack it..... have you been making those fabric balls i gave you the links for?
can i see a pic?

Thanks everyone (and Pepe), it's getting better by the day. I didn't want to make them over frilly and lacy but the next lot most likely will be a little more embellished with pins rather than cutting into them if I can figure out an easier way. Will get the foam larger diameter this time, small makes it harder to push the fabric around.

Pepe, I followed another of your links and ended up rushing off to the fabric store and getting something quite different than I had been working with already. I also noticed that your decorations were much more even than mine so I decided I had to work to get them looking neater. Ended up with a kind of dance tulle fabric with a sequin look, so far so good .. thank you again.

wow i really like that!! and the granite bench reflecting it too lol.
that fabric is really effective.
i found the trick to getting them even is to use rubber bands to mark iff the sections, fiddle with them until you are happy then press them into the ball then cut along the grooves they leave behind.
its easier to cut a straight line that way.

Do you mean press the rubber bands into the balls themselves?

yep, i press on the bands with the back of the scalpel so they actually dig into the foam and leave a groove.
then remove the bands and make your cut in that groove.
i found my lines were straighter than if i drew on it with a marker
