Yes, re Portsea, not much left.

I have been IN the RIP as a diver, in a little canoe, a Zodiac inflatable, a dive / fishing boat, Navy landing craft

and a Fast Patrol boat. The tides moves through there at a huge speed and increasing it will only make

it far worse - as has been shown.

Re the beach at Portsea, I am surprised they haven't put Groins out into the sea to stop the sand erosion.

This would rebuild the beach in no time (They use them a lot in the UK).

If you get caught in the RIP, you move so fast along the bottom it is not funny.

And I mean so fast, I saw a china plate on the sea bed, went to grab it and was

2 yards past it by the time my hand hit the sand.

I used to fish the Rip years ago, for Kingfish and Salmon - but given the increased tidal flow now, it's become too dangerous and unpredictable in anything less than a 6-8 metre hull. The days of plying it in my old 4.5 m hull are long gone. The current at Portsea Pier, (particularly the falling tide), now seems as fast as it used to be in the Rip!

Groins unfortunately won't work at Portsea, as it's not longshore drift that's causing the erosion - it's waves generated by the increased tidal streams in the Heads, which sweep around the curving shore and roll directly into Portsea. If you look closely at the earlier pic  posted, you can see that although the Bay is smooth, there are waves generated by ocean movement, which is now unimpeded as it rolls into the Bay. Strong wave movements used to be halted/disrupted by the underwater Shearblade.

The only way to prevent the waves would be a breakwater, a couple of hundred meters off shore. But then it would have to extend from the Quarantine Station, all the way to Point King to save the foreshore.

Hardly a thing the government will expend money on, given their stuff up in the first place!

Agree re the bigger boats.

I have only been to Portsea once, Landed at about midnight, left at 05.30am !

I don't believe Portsea should have been leased, they should have opened up the whole area

to the general public.

Anywhere on Port Phillip bay in anything that is close to the water is "interesting" to say the least.

Try doing it in one of these made in WWII or just afterwards, at night (with no lights)

in the middle of a Melbourne winter ! Smiley LOL

Nice

Do you know what a Shark Cat is ?

Twin Hulled something or other. That is / was our Safety boat, was great out in the Ocean (Bass Strait), even in Mid Winter but didn't like the choppiness of Port Phillip bay.

Re: Faces of the future declare web war

Yup. I also know exactly what a cat is. Been around boats for the best part of 45 years!

Lovely-riding hulls, if a bit wet, the cats, but on PPB, there's nothing like length to straddle the waves, crest to crest, and missing out on the troughs in between!

I've been 5 miles offshore out in the bay, and when a summer squall comes through, you can be facing 2metre breaking waves before you can get the fishing lines and anchor stowed!

Makes for a rather bumpy trip home, too.

Evil

We were in Bass straight one night, 5 Zodiacs in line astern, with only a little zylume stick as light.
I was tail end charlie.

I swear the waves were 12.-15 feet high, we came off the tops and into the troughs.
I didnt see the other boats from sometimes 10 - 15 minutes, i just stayed on the bearing - and prayed LOL

I have never been so close to such rough water.

We were 22Nm off shore.
