I'm in the process of finding a placement for my OH, who has dementia, in a High Care Nursing home. It's all new and confusing to me and frustrating....so thought I'd ask if anyone is interested in my day to day inquiries and answers I've found (or not!) Might make it easier for someone else when it comes to their time to do the same?

When I had my mum's, we had the original, which was registered.
As he is in NSW, we had to ask the solicitor (and pay) to take it to the bank to be sighted.
The person who is granted POA is suppoed to collect it from the solicitor's office to produce to the authorities. This is to ensure that only the person authorised to use it has access to it.
The copy held in my father's house was clearly labelled Copy and not even notorised and anyone could have accessed it. There was very little verification done by the bank etc....they just accepted it.
Had any family members wanted to challenge it the banks would have been in strife for accepting a non notorised copy without question.

hello everyone....just a foreword. thank you all very much for your help on this thread.
I've found a place for OH in a nursing home close to my daughter and her children and not too far from me. Went to visit today to check out this place, were very impressed and they had a vacancy. Came home and the director rang me and he's being taken in in about 10 days... still a lot of paper work to do..Centrellink doctors etc. but a HUGE step forward and a load off my mind.
Thanks everyone

That is great news.
If your OH is going direct from one nursing home to another you should not have any problems at all.
My Dad went from hospital to the nursing home....the ACAT team arranged ambulance transport and all we had to do was take his clothing from one place to the other.

My FIL went from hospital to nursing home by the community ambulance but when he moved nursing homes, my OH moved him. Not sure if that was because it was interstate though.
Gill, as for the centrlink documents, it looks frightful but it isn't really, once you start it becomes clearer as a lot of it does not apply.

That;s great news Gill. I really hope that you both can now relax and enjoy your lives. It is fantastic that the place is so close yourself and Family. Now it really is time to care for yourself, you have done everything possible to ease his way.
