I don't fish but am thinking of buying my nephew a rod. What's the best one?

I want to get him a really good one because he is a lovely boy, all he wanted for xmas was a book about animals. His mother is a "tiger mum" so his life is extremely structured and i want to spoil him a little.
You can spend a lot of money on gear. You can also get a really good set up that doesn't cost a lot. There are all types rods and reels depending on what kind of fishing you're doing. If you want something better than the pic I posted try a combo set. I like Penn reels.
If you live near/in town your best bet is just visit a bait and tackle shop and tell them what you want and how much money you want to spend. They'd happily set you up with exactly what you ask for.
I prefer artificial lures so I don't have to bait the hook, lol. Yeah I feel sorry for even putting a worm on a hook.
My favourite way to fish is on a charter boat. You don't need to bring any fishing gear, they set up the rods and even bait the hook for you.

my interpretation only: every hour of childs time is filled with structured activities none of which are designed just for fun. (the short version).

Jimmy, there is a 24 hour bait and tackle shop a few ks away, 24 hour, I thought maybe it was a front for a drug running op. I will have to pretend i have a little knowledge or i will walk out with an empty purse, I am a salespersons dream.

Everything should have price tags on them, just tell them you want to look first if they ask. If your not sure after looking just give them a set amount you want to spend and you'll be ok.
Living on an island I didn't think we had 24 hour bait and tackle shops, but googling I see we do. *wonders if they're a front? could be convenient, lol*. I can also shop on line a them....maybe give that a look before going to one.

no expense spared for your boy ? love it boris
if you lived around here i would custom build you one, for you
first up theres a broad selection of pier fishing rod types and lengths
and a jetty can be anywhere, you know...river, estuary...beach
and 9 year old can be just as good as an adult at fishing
for a 6 foot flick rod (theyre so versatile!. I'm guessing this is what youre thinking
one can be selected as a One peice, coz they can fit in just about any vehicle without too much drama, there are no ferrules to maintain or worry about (most of my rods are one piece) and one piece rods are stronger then their 2 piece equivalents
so basically ask your local tackle guy, where the rod will be used, what lure weights will be casted and a reel to suit
for muilti purpose; ask for a 6kg outfit
can be used anywhere, even off a boat for whiting and the like

oh and tell 'em, what fish species will be targetted, 6kg outfits can handle anything from a small gar and exceed 6kg - just about fight anything heavy if the boy knows how to play'em
