Flat Pack Assembly

I do most of the flat pack assembly at our place.

Not that it's been much, a cpl of bookshelves and a telephone table with shelves, easy enough

One time we had to assemble a futon for a spare room, hubs helped me with that, but generally leaves it to me.

This morning I was driving to work I saw a handyman's van with FLAT PACK ASSEMBLY SPECIALIST emblazoned on it.

I know there's probably more complicated things to assemble than bookshelves, but really?

You can hire a specialist to do your flat pack assembly now?

Very enterprising.

I dont mind it either, it's a challenge.

I did our futon, as well, that we keep as a day bed. Hubs helped me with that, though. We made a mistake with that, putting long screws where we should've put the short screws.

Woman LOL

So we had to undo it and do it over.

Interesting.........a day bed you say ???

Smiley Surprised

Re: Flat Pack Assembly

I'm really bad with instructions putting cabnets and such together. If I try to go by the instructions, I'll mess it up. Without the instructions I fare better, but I still have to put it all out in front of me and study all the pieces for a while. When it starts to make sense, thats when I start putting it together.

Now if i'm building shelves with 1x8 lumber, I first write out my own instructions based on measurements and have no problem. Measure from the top on a dresser, desk, or cabnet to the celing, come down half a foot, then the length and and wala, slap in the plexiglas shelves.

.

Fun Factor : Now you have a choice in chat, factor that

Re: Flat Pack Assembly

I am a bit the same joanie, instructions confuse the hell out of me, I look at the picture on the box and kind of figure it out from there, which is maybe why I don't have much furniture! LOL

I'm hopeless with measurements. Recently I lined the shelves of our linen press with wallpaper. I'd cut the lengths too long and have to keep trimming them then cut them too short lol, then start again lol.

Re: Flat Pack Assembly

That's where if you had been given a model kit as a child you would have gained valuable experience in using instructions. I have always been able to repair anything I own due to making model kits. Instructions are your friend. Couple of years ago I taught myself how to fix watches and clocks with a lever escape movement. I can't fix ones with a Swiss movement but you need a special press for them.

Re: Flat Pack Assembly

OK all, flatpack assembly lesson 101.

Collect a lot of small cardboard boxes, from Bunnings or someone who throws them away.

Open the carton.

Put each pack of screws etc in a separate box and write their part number on the front of the box.

Put all same sized boards together in a seperate pile and stick a sheet of paper with part number on top one.

Put instruction sheet and allan key in kliplock bag.

Put cold bottle of wine or beer on table along with glass.

Have a drink

Get started

After each section is completed, ie the base is connected to the castors, have a glass of your favoutite tipple and repeat this essential step as each section is completed.

On completion have anotheer glass.

Re: Flat Pack Assembly

For the first time this year we hired someone to put 3 glass cabinets together

Hubby had already put together numerous items of furniture when we moved and had had enough....I also didn't trust him with glass!
