Floating Floorboards Yes or No?

We are looking at replacing the old worn carpet in the sun/family room    .... Options are floating floor boards or genuine timber flooring, so would welcome any suggestions, for and against each type or flooring pls

No intentions of lifting the yellow tongue martini, not keen on laminate at all, so we are looking at pine floor boards over the yellow tongue .....

I had a fully engineered strand woven 2.5cm bamboo floor put over black slate. Its wide and white and easy to look after. If by any chance it gets scratched it scratches white so barely noticable.

If I could have I would have has a black butt floor put down, there's no comparison to a real timber floor imo

Looks nice Lightning 🙂   We are now discussing laying either slate or quarry tiles instead of timber, I think it would be easier to care for than timber.

We have black toned slate downstairs and it's OK but a bit cold in winter so big floor rugs are necessary. I wouldn't make it my 1st choice but it all depends what you can afford.

Bamboo is a renewable resource and the new strand woven wide boards no longer have the bamboo notches in it so it's pretty flawless. It's easy to clean and good foot feel. It's really just like a fully timber floor without the hassle of laying joists to take a tongue and groove timber floor.

It's cheaper than other engineered flooring as well.

I personally like slate, but agree it can be a bit cold and we do get cold winters here. On the other hand the room has HUGE window that faces west so it gets full sun in the afternoon. We moved in last Jan and it was like an oven, had the ac running most of the time. We have now installed a large automatic roller blind on the outside so hopefully that will stop a lot of the summer heat. So I think the room could cope with slate or tiles in the summer and a large floor mat for the winter time.

Just took a quick pic of the window, as you can see it is huge.  Excuse the mess, we are painting the kitchen atm, so there is carp everywhere.

i wouldnt recommend slate, it's in my extention room (concrete foundation)

when i moved in the previous owner didnt seal the floor.. so i gave it a couple of coats

the finish didnt last long.. seemed to scratch up and dulled in no time

the annoying thing i found about it is.. it's not a flat surface, so office chairs and the like.. doesnt work well

there are so many chips on the floor because of it

if i were you, i'd go a good looking lino covering (cheap)

Joz  I couldnt live witha viynl floor, know what you mean re slate, we are ;painting all the walls atm, so there is plenty of time to think about what would look the best.

If you like more of a stone look, what about polished concrete?  That way you would get the stone look but without all the dips and bumps that you get with slate.  I think you can even have it looking like a lovely polished marble floor.  

I love the timber floor look but if you get that full on summer sun it really does erode any finish you put on timber. You don't want the blinds down all the time blocking your view.

That why we are considering tiling it and the kitchen, seems to be the way we a re leaning atm for for ease of maintenance
