Foot-long in mouth: Shorten apologises to sandwich chain - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has apologised to the Australian arm of American sandwich and salad restaurant Subway after he incorrectly accused the franchise of ripping off workers.

In his media conference today Mr Shorten was talking about the potential impacts of the China free trade deal on Australian workers.

"We want to make sure that we don't see people coming here on visas being exploited and undercutting Australian jobs," he said.

"I think we've all been appalled and disgusted by the scenes at Subway where literally thousands of people on visas are being ripped off."

"He meant 7/11 of course."    Who knows?,  gone are the halcyon days when he did not have to think but could just blindly support what Poor Me said: " I haven't seen what she said, but let me say I support what it is that she's said."

Anyway,  both sides utter bloopers, we all do occasionally.

What I find hard to reconcile at the moment is the CFMEU choristers on one hand (or fist) suggesting that visa holders are very naughty boys (and girls) and should please return whence they came, and Harvey Shorten saying that 7/11 (et al?) visa employees should be paid  their full entitlements whilst presumably maintaining their positions in Australia.

Foreigners on a student visa aren't allowed to work more than 20 hrs a week.

Re: Foot-Long in Mouth Shorton

You are correct M1C,  and  they and 457 Visa holders can work (within regulations) quite legally here, but the CFMEU are somewhat weepy  over the presence of the latter.

Perhaps I am silly thinking the topic is often used with a degree of homophobia because it resonates with the ALP/ACTU faithful, or should I say hoped-for faithful.e.g:  Myopic Tongues2 Small.jpg
