Bob I'm not saying quoting scriptures is wrong :^O
If you actually read my posts you'll understand what my point was all about.
Anyway .. I'm off to chant for the peace and happiness of all living creatures. 😄
Do you realise how much effort I did studying the bible. I'm just trying to show it off.:-D Unlike 99% of my fellow Christians who knows little about why they believe. It's really not that interesting book to read, you'd think something written or inspired by God should be the best book ever that no one can put down. Unfortunately it wasn't:-(

Seriously, considering that you believe Christian debates are "so mind numbingly boring" and the fact that surely you know by now how this types of threads turn out, why would you start a thread about God? :^O

huh?
I think you're clutching at straws meep. I vaguely remember the thread but not what I said, but I certainly have an opinion that assigning a gender to God was questionable. I am allowed to have an opinion .. am I?
Oh, I get it. An opinion is a luxury that only you are afforded.
Good to know I've finally got that straight.
Cheers :-x

I felt the same about Moby Dick and another book I can't even remember the name of - but one of those "classics" that everyone's supposed to read and love.

Of course.
I would consider referring to others' beliefs as stupid to be denigrating but maybe thats just me...

You've just insulted God. If you can't understand it, the problem is you Not God.
Corinthians 14:33 "For God is not the author of confusion..."
Can you think of any other book in history that's caused more confusion or more deaths?
I did not insult God nor did I say it was anyone else's fault it is hard to understand........there you go again... rewriting.

I didn't say you are denigrating religion. You are denigrating those who DO denigrate religion. I can't speak for Crikey, but my sense is that when he says you "denigrate the opinions and beliefs of others", I don't think he (she?) meant religious people, but people like Bob and myself. I could be wrong though. I've been watching the Walking Dead season finale, so my attention is divided 🙂
that's exactly what I said.
and whilst I was primarily thinking along the same lines as you, I did intend the statement as an overarching generalization to incorporate those with true religious belief and those involved in the discussion from an academic perspective - so as I said "the beliefs and opinions of others".
As I said, Catholicism was indoctrinated into me as a child and a lot of that still sticks enough for me to go to Church at Easter and Christmas and to chat with God when I feel the need, and the History of the Vatican and all the symbology surrounding "my Faith" totally fascinates me - but in reality I'm a bit of a fence sitter these days - yes, I believe in God, and I believe I that I have been blessed with 2 miracles in my life, but I do have a lot of questions about how it all really played out.

Do you think the bible is confusing Quilts? Yes or No.

Very interesting post Crikey. May I ask what the two miracles were?

And I respect Buddhism very much, probably more than any other world religion, with the possible exception of Taoism.
godsandmen
You kinda lost me there with " You are denigrating those who DO denigrate religion". Not sure I understand what you mean?
I've never denigrated Bob nor yourself. As I said I respect your posts godsandmen because you state your opinions/beliefs without personally attacking or twisting words.
I've also said in past threads that I respect the true meaning of Christianity. We Buddhists regard Jesus as a Buddha, which means "Enlightened One". Jesus preached love and tolerance, compassion and forgiveness.
The Buddha said not to take his teachings at face value. That we must question and apply his teachings directly to our lives to prove his teachings are correct. Just because someone calls themselves a Buddhist does not a Buddhist make. Just as calling oneself a Christian does not a Christian make.
But I would never intentionally denigrate someone's religion UNLESS that religion spreads hatred and fear.
