God is the Universal Source of All That Has Been All That Is All That Will

I have a question for you Bob.  What do you think about the 'afterlife' according to some Buddhist teachings?  Are you afraid you might end up in the different levels of hell according to the teachings of Buddha?

or is it a case of "I don't believe in it so it won't happen" ???

Are you suppose to be addressing me??:| I don't know much about it.  I just know about the basic reincarnation bit. My only contention is does this belief lead to people doing harm. If not, why should I care.

and while you're waiting for Cat to answer, the offerings would be a kind of worshipping; traditional Theravada chants:

With lights brightly shining
Abolishing this gloom
I adore the Enlightened One,
The Light of the three worlds.

With perfumed incense
And fragrant smoke
I worship the Exalted One,
Who is great and worthy of worship.

I worship the Buddha with these flowers;
May this virtue be helpful for my emancipation;
Just as these flowers fade,
Our body will undergo decay.

There goes meep again.

Anyway Clair .. this is my cut and paste answer ๐Ÿ˜‰

Basic offerings of candles, evergreens and incense are placed in front of the altar where the Gohonzon is enshrined. One or two candles are generally offered to provide light (electric candles are also used). One or two vases of evergreen are arranged on the altar in lieu of flowers that in Indian tradition were scattered over the Buddha as an offering. One to three sticks of incense are burned as an offering of fragrance. In addition, a cup of fresh water is generally placed in front of the Gohonzon in the morning, water being highly regarded in the hot country of India where Buddhism started. It also has become traditional to offer fruit or other food, in the spirit of the Buddha's disciples who offered him food.

It is easy to imagine the practicality and significance of these offerings in an era when candles may have been the only source of light, incense was used to purify the air and the Buddha depended on his followers to provide subsistence.

Much symbolism has been attached to these offerings over the centuries, but none of it constitutes the essence of faith. Today many view these offerings as creating an environment conducive to chanting and as symbolizing basic human needs: water and food sustain life, candles and incense engage our senses, while evergreen reminds us of the eternity of life.

PS I practice Mahayana Buddhism based on Shakyamuni Buddha's later sutra's.

You have said in the past that you follow all religions and since you keep asking about hell so often, I was curious as to how you reconcile the different concepts of its existence ?:|

So how do you?

So if you say if you do bad things you'll end up in Hell.

So if you do good things but reject God, where do you go?

Bob .... Hello .... testing ... 1 2 3 4  is anyone out there?

You seem to have a fixation with going to hell .....

everyone goes to hell ..... hell is the grave .... there is no burning in the classic hell-fire that Catholic and most Protestant religions used to push  ... even the Pope says so ....Eve, we spoke about this several times .... You quoted me an article written by the Pope .....

or did I dream it????

Anyway, did anyone watch Q&A?  Muslim, Catholic, Jew and Atheist ???

Oh the question of hell according to Buddhism?

I have discussed this already. The branch of Buddhism I practice does not believe in a hell outside of ourselves. We do not 'go to hell' after we die. We are absorbed into the Universal Source ready to incarnate again.

The Ten Worlds

1. Hell can be experienced here on earth. It is a state of suffering, depression, misery, fear and feeling there is no way out. It is in our own mind. However, there is always Buddha Nature in the world of Hell. Suffering and overcoming such suffering can lead to wisdom and compassion for the suffering of other living creatures and wanting to help them overcome their suffering.

This is what is meant by the Buddhist phrase "turning poison into medicine".

Yes meep, you like to speak for me when it comes to Buddhism.

Yes, you were incorrect. Clair asked why I offer fruit. I don't practice Theravada Buddhism. We do not worship Buddha. Buddha is not a God. We chant to realise our own Buddha Nature.
