Have you ever hired a gold detector? How did you go?
I would like to find one bit of gold, just one to keep so I can say I found some.
We only hired a gold detector once years ago anyway and found nothing

've been doing a bit of gold detecting for years now, and have my own detector, but 've never found anything worth a mention when it comes to gold.
I prefer going out and doing 'Treasure troving' with my machine where I've had far greater success rates with all sorts of things.
The machines to do treasure troving are far cheaper to buy too for a beginner, only a couple of hundred bucks upward for something that'll do the job fine, even in water.

My favorite treasure trover detector is a 'Bounty Hunter' that cost me about $300 brand new including an 'open coi'l and a 'gold nugget coil', carry bag etc.
The coils etc. are fully sealed so it works fine in a couple of feet of water where I often find interesting bits and pieces, including gold jewellery, so I may not have found 'THE' gold nugget find of a lifetime, but I have found quite a bit of real solid gold that way :^O

On one of their holidays with us a couple of years ago, I bought my stepdaughter and niece a cheap metal detector (was only about $10 + postage on ebay).
Before they arrived I scattered about $15 in coins around the backyard. It kept them busy for hours - very cheap school holiday entertainment! They also found other "treasures" around the property which they were pretty chuffed with.

I have always wanted to hire one & have a go at it with the family, just for fun. I know someone who's in some sort of prospecting club, and she finds bits of gold.
JJ I think was going to get a detector after someone found a huge nugget recently out his way

Butting in here Joz as I know you address your commet to Clair....
Most of the sort of coins you're taking about will be worth nix mate, but you might just turn the odd one up that's worth a couple of bucks.
Check for the dates in the lists you'll find in coin sites on the web. There's heaps of those around.
If you don't find the dates listed then just use the buggers for rifle target practise like I do lol.

That'd be Ballarat Vic area.
The decent finds are very rare but anyone could strike lucky the very first time out, just not me at any time when it comes to gold nuggets :_|

yea mine most likely be the common type pennys moona, i know there are some rare collectable ones with unusal pictures, but a few bucks for the run of the mil pennys are still better then a kick in the head lol
