Great Barrier Reef spawning to be broadcast live

Itโ€™s a massive natural phenomenon thatโ€™s right on our doorstep and itโ€™s hoped that an Australian first event will bring the whole country together in awe.

Starting on Friday night, the ABC will be airing live footage of the Great Barrier Reefโ€™s spawning event, which only happens once a year and which scientists have predicted could begin this weekend.

โ€œThis is an Australian first, itโ€™s a real time visual insight into this massive biological phenomenon,โ€ actor Brooke Satchwell, co-host of the Reef Live program told news.com.au.

โ€œItโ€™s a breeding event on such a scale that it can be seen from space.โ€

The Great Barrier Reef is the only natural structure that can be seen unaided from space and is home to about 9000 species.

โ€œThey are all regenerating and procreating because of the synchronicity of the temperature, light and the moon,โ€ Satchwell said.

โ€œThis is how the reef regenerates and itโ€™s the size of Italy and itโ€™s extraordinary.โ€

The Seachange star said Reef Live, beginning at 8.30pm on Friday and 8.40pm on Sunday, would provide a โ€œglass bottom boat into peopleโ€™s living roomsโ€.

โ€œThis is an opportunity for a shared cultural event, up there with sporting events and the moon landing,โ€ she said.

Lal, it can be watched on Australian ABC iView.  I believe you can watch it internationally now.

But you have to subscribe.     It costs nothing to subscribe.  I can't even recall any annoying emails coming in, if that's a problem for you.

Hope it works and you can watch.  There's already one episode there, waiting to be watched.

Reef Live : ABC iview

Thank you so much! So, is there just the 2 episodes mentioned? We will watch both , and more, if possible! The two new things here in my visual world are the National Geographic channel, and something called "CuriosityStreaming", which is all documentaries, and some pretty neat stuff for 12 dollars a year, a present for all of my brats, young and old, when they're here. I like it too, lol! There's one called "Ancient Oceans" that is wonderful.

My little man says that it will be shown in its entirety on one of his documentary websites soon and we'll watch it then. Again, thank you for posting about it!
