Nova, you are wrong on so many points.

One of the reasons the "animal protection"  groups are calling for ban on racing dogs is that it = the actual race, is cruel to them.  I was just pointing out that racing dogs is based on their natural instinct to chase.  Horses are the prey of what ever predator,  and as grazing animal they do not have to chase the grass, they are chased and that is stressful to them.  And yes, I have watched my horses in my paddock to run for fun, and I also watched them when they get spooked and then run all together until they feel safe.  I have also seen them to run into fences when spooked.

I am aware that there are whip rules in racing, but the study that I was talking about showed that the horses were significantly bruised.  I cannot find that particular article but the research was done at Sydney Uni:

http://sydney.edu.au/news/84.html?newsstoryid=8868

The thing is that greyhound breeders  say they need the large quantity of litter to get the few good dogs.  And greyhounds rarely have 6 pups, it's more like 8 and up; I have seen 10 or 12 often.

If this ban does not get reversed there will be some 100 000 dogs needing home, handful might get sold interstate, but majority will be euthanized.

Not all greyhound breeders/trainers are bad.

My daughter lived on a greyhound breeding/training property where there was a private training track.  The kennels were spectacular and the animals very well looked after.

I am sure all of the kennels are built according to specifications and the dogs are well fed etc.  If the kennels were not right the establishment would not get their license.  And the dogs are well fed and care for or they would not perform.  It's what happens when they are not fast enough that matters.  Nobody is able to get all their unwanted dogs through GAP.

I found the info about the racehorse whipping study:

Re: Greyhound Racing Banned in NSW

you are possibly correct in your guess of this banning of racing causing about 100,000 dogs to need rehoming, not going to happen as there are never going to be that many people taking a greyhound as a pet.

but the figures the NSW premier was quoting were something like 34,000 per year now being killed.

as terrible as it seems i would prefer a one off 100,000 kill than to carry on killing 34,000 year after year after year.

put the greyhound on the same breeding pattern as any other purebred dog, only breed what can be sold as pets or show dogs from now on.

Re: Greyhound Racing Banned in NSW

RSPCA APPEAR NOT TO SEE THE GRASS FOR THE TREES

How many million animal torture videos would you like to see?

All to catch torture a larger fish and tag it and let it go again.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpnlY3mqyzI

Catching fish to eat is a great idea catching fish using animal torture for pleasure b y rigging a smaller fish through the

eyes is a totally different "kettle of fish"

The RSPCA have not got the balls to take on "sport' where it really counts...... Hypocrites

The fact is that animal cruelty amongst fishermem in general is 1000 times worse than the greyhound industry...

it's just that too many people fish to argue with

Parents even encourage their kids to ritually torture sentient creatures, smile and take pictures of the catch, then throw it

back... with a bit of luck to be tortures again another day

https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/animal-emotions/201406/fish-are-sentient-and-emotional-beings-a...

  • They [fish] develop cultural traditions and can even recognize themselves and others
  • They also show signs of Machiavellian intelligence, such as cooperation and reconciliation
  • Professor Brown said the primary senses of the fish are "just as good" and in some cases better than that of humans.
  • The level of mental complexity that fish display is on a par with most other vertebrates, while there is mounting evidence that they can feel pain in a manner similar to humans

Re: Greyhound Racing Banned in NSW

With respect I think you are missing my point

The live baiting in greyhound racing is minimal compared to fishing howver It should not occur in either.

Had pet chickens when I was a kid raised em up till they were pullets..... then ate most of em... same with the lambs

and pigs.

Helped with many many dog litters, and had some great pets but never eaten one.... never had the inkling too either.

however

25 Million dogs are consumed each year by humans

So it's socially acceptable somewhere

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_meat

Slow greyhounds make good tucker overseas apparently.

Howver the export system needs to be monitored and regulated so that animal distress is minimized just like the live

export of cattle, lambs etc...

The animal rights activists will be up in arms they would prefer that no animals were exported overseas regardless of

the checks in place

.... I gotta go....

the hypocrisy  just seems striking when comparing fish and dog cruelty

Wow!,from 48,000 to 68,000 in 12 years to 34,000 per year is an exaggeration.(similar to some of the other

statements the premier has made).

Please keep it "real".

perhaps there should be an inquest into horse racing too? how many horses get born for racing and dont make it? what happens to the too slow race horses?

i expect something similar to greyhounds.

David it was you who first raised the issue of horse racing.   I only answered some of the questions you asked.

It is hardly fair to complain when other posters attempt to clarify the issues you have raised.
