Re: Greyhound Racing Banned in NSW

actually no, i wasn't the first to raise horse racing, message 5 mentions banning horse racing.

but yes, i did talk about it too.

i did say 'please' could we return to greyhounds,

i include myself in that and ive avoided talking about any other animal sports since.

i felt the horse racing talk was going nowhere, everything was covered, if someone wants to start a new thread for horse racing discussion so be it.

Re: Greyhound Racing Banned in NSW

Believe me, I am not about to start a thread about horse racing any time soon....it was done to death last November and nothing good came of it.  All it proved was that some members hate any form of horse racing or competition.

There was also a suggestion that horses should not have riders when they race.Smiley LOL

my view is none.

Everyone has their own view and they are entitled to it but nothing good comes from exaggerating a story.

Re: Greyhound Racing Banned in NSW

There is so much wrong being done, incredible cruelties inflicted on animals and on other humans.  In Syria and Iraq people are being bombed, and if they manage to get out of there they are stuck in horrible conditions in camps, and nobody wants them.

Little boy chickens are crushed alive, the girls have few miserable months growing and then we eat them, or the laying hens are mostly squashed in little cages.  The cattle and sheep also suffer before they are slaughtered.  And the poor fish.

So, lets ban greyhound racing.........?   In all that evil in the world, I would not grade dog racing on the top.

Where have I ever said that dog racing is the top of the list of evils in the world?

As far as I am concerned there are many things wrong with the treatment of animals all over the world but I don't think the dog racing industry deserves to be singled out for complete closure.

Re: Greyhound Racing Banned in NSW

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, personally I want to see grey hound racing banned  ..... Banning puppy farming and registered dog breeders who are  totally destroying the look/shape  of some dog breeds would be great as well   ..

Re: Greyhound Racing Banned in NSW

Who do you think should be allowed to breed if you think that registered breeding should be banned?  I agree about the way some breeds are bred for exaggeration, which is wrong.  Terrible what they have done to GSDs and some other breeds, but what has been selectively bred for the wrong reasons can be selectively breed against, and it is not going to improve by banning registered breeders.  At least some registered breeders do have some idea, if you leave breeding in hands of back yard breeder, things are only going to get worse.  Registered breeders spend a fortune importing new bloodlines and at least try to keep genetic diversity as good as possible within the KC narrow pure line definition.

Re: Greyhound Racing Banned in NSW

one of the few positives to the greyhound racing is that they have created a very good natured, very healthy dog.

unfortunately for a few trainers that wasnt good enough and they went the way of thinking live baiting would make a better/faster dog. i dont know if there is any real benefit gained by live baiting, i doubt it. pretty hard to proove without actually doing it in a controlled setting but i'd never condone that in a million years.

i just really hope once all greyhound racing is banned that the breed will continue as a pet/show dog and they do not start breeding greyhounds to look good on the show bench.

Re: Greyhound Racing Banned in NSW

David, every breed of dog that is registered for showing (and horses too for that matter) has a recognised Breed Standard.

When animals are judged the idea is to choose the winner that is the closest to that standard in looks and temperament.

I can't speak for the dog ring but with horses there is usually a lot of "discussion" as to whether the judge has any idea what they are talking about.   The winners are usually very vocal to support the judge while the losers are equally vocal to insist that they don't have a clue.

Have a look at the Breed Standard for Greyhounds and see what you think....would your dog win in the showring?  Does it matter?

Many years ago I owned a Corgi.  He came from a long line of show dogs but was sold as a pet because he had too much white in his coat and an ear that was slow in standing up.   He was the most placid and loving little pup and never snapped or snarled at anyone, unlike some of the show dogs that we used to see.
