just heard a breaking news story on ABC radio saying the NSW govt will ban greyhound racing as of mid next year.
as an owner of an ex racer but not in nsw i will watch with great interest this story as it unfolds.

If you re read my post, I didnt say ALL registered breeders should been banned.
Personally, Im not a fan of dog shows or show dogs, but each to their own
bty not all registered breeders are ethical, import new lines etc, some do, many dont

I have 3 GSD's, one was bred by a top NSW breeder, he was in shocking cond I rescued him from a pound, he also has HD, I traced his breeder through his ear tattoo, when I phoned her, she didnt want to know, she totally denied that she had bred him 'cause "she doesn't breed dogs with HD" .... Interesting that he has her breeders tattoo in his ear

a few years ago i saw a program on tv relating to the breeders of some types of dogs breeding to the point where the dogs skull was becoming too small for the brain. the results were horendous for the dog.
not sure if this is the same story but it seems to fit what i remember.

its very good to have standards but if breeders and judges let things slip it can go wrong it seems
when i got my newest burmese cat after my previous cat passed away at 19years old i took photos of jardel (my previous burmese) with me to show the lady i was getting rosie from. she took one look at the photos and said, oh they dont look like that anymore and told me how breeding had changed the body and head shape in the 19 years since i got jardel.
the woman i was buying rosie from was the president of the south australian burmese breeders. i cant see any difference but i dont have the 2 cats next to each other to compare. the temperment seems very much the same.

Yes, syringomyelia. The BBC did a documentary on it and it was horrifying to see the agony that it causes. And this is caused by 'breeders'. Interbreeding is also responsible for a lot of the dreadful conditions that befall dogs.
But those stories deserve their own thread, this is about greyhounds and there's enough woe going on there. Slow dogs being shot and mass graves found (can't find link but not hard to find), and live bait. And despite warnings the practices continue. So in my books I'm glad it has been banned. in NSW at the least. Whether the ban will be enforced will be another story of course as money talks.

have you read all the posts in this thread? look at the first one, you might recognise the poster.
yes, this thread is about the banning of greyhound racing
the post you highlighted is part of a discussion about where greyhounds will fit into the 'system' after racing isnt an option.
i want to be able to buy a pet greyhound, purebreed not a backyard breeders dog.
here in south australia the only legal way to get a pet greyhound is via GAP as only owner/trainers can get puppies as far as i know.
you cant just rock up to a breeder and say i want one as pet.
some greyhounds do appear in shelters and i'm sure a bit of selling/giving away goes on out of sight. but as they are registered for racing i'm sure you shouldnt be giving them away.
i have a GAP dog. have had him for 5 years. best dog ive ever been associated with.

you seem to also be missing a very big point.
yes the live baiting is shocking, but it was just the news item that drew out the other more shocking problem in greyhound racing.
the fact they are killing thousands of dogs each year because they are never going to be 'winners' on the track.
yes some find new homes if they pass the tests, and if the trainers bother to hand them over for adoption. as i said before here in south australia trainers had to pay a fee i think of $200 to GAP.
i also believe a lot of trainers are not sitting on that kind of money so its no suprise a lot of dogs get euthenised by not allways ethical ways. the governing boards should know this but claim they dont. as they had no idea live baiting was going on, yeah right.
so the number 1 problem is the breeding of thousands of pups only to dispose of the majority as they just can never rehome that many dogs. its amazing they manage to rehome as many as they do but thats most likely been helped by the huge amount of publicity gained in the past 2 years.
before the live baiting story broke most people would never have thought twice about the greyhound racing industry.
now its out there being exposed, i for one hope other states follow nsw.

Trainers here in WA are protesting that live baiting doesn't happen here. It probably doesn't - but it would be interesting to know how many owners have their dogs "blooded" interstate. It's not simply the trainers who practice live baiting who are the probem, it's the many owners who send their dogs to these trainers knowing full well what is involved.

There are people who breed show greyhounds. These dogs are not raced and therefore not blooded.

There was a lovely lady in SA who bred show greyhounds; sadly she was killed last year; looks like her family may be continuing with the dogs:

From my experience the show greyhounds are just as sweet as the GAP dogs.

thank you, ive bookmarked that site.
until ex racers are no longer available i will continue to rehome them but its good to know there are non racing breeders out there.
