just heard a breaking news story on ABC radio saying the NSW govt will ban greyhound racing as of mid next year.
as an owner of an ex racer but not in nsw i will watch with great interest this story as it unfolds.

you hit a nail on the head there, the various groups trying to clean up the mess humans are making of the pet industry are being used as an excuse to not do anything about greyhound racing.
the RSPCA and AWL and all the other groups left with no alternative but to put to sleep mamy many unwanted pets isnt their fault its the many many in the community who treat pets as a disposable commodity.
i hate that in the argument about banning greyhound racing some of those wanting the cruelty to continue are pointing at other cruelty to say 'well you let them be cruel why attack us?'
do i want every cruelty to animal issue delt with, of course, today its greyhound racing, tomorrow who knows. cruelty is cruelty. if you are not in anyway being cruel to an animal in your 'sport' then you have nothing to worry about from me.
breeding an animal for a particular 'sport' then killing it because its not up to being competitive is cruel. end of story.

so here we go, allready the "industry" is turning to SHOCK tactics.
an un-named industry person has supposedly told a breeder his only option in regards to a new litter of pups will be killing them if the ban is enforced.
so we get the HUGE headline, but on reading the whole story where the "un-named" person is not revealed we then get the truth that re-homing is a preferred option.
i expect this sort of carp to become widespread as the ban becomes more likely to be enforced.

One good thing, looking at dog rescue sites and gumtree iv seen a couple now rehoming greyhounds as" they were planning to breed them ,but will not now due to the changes". So thats probably some improvement.

decisions by states like tasmania and south australia are i believe driven by the fact these 2 states are in financial difficulties and dont have (so they would say) the funds to clean up the aftermath of closing the industry down.
NSW is a much stronger economy and will be more able to fund the many programs in the 'after' greyhound racing cleanup.
if closing the industry was based soley on the welfare of the dogs i believe all states and territorys would shut greyhound racing down over night.
there is more than enough real evedence that the death rate in the wastage area of greyhound racing would never be tollerated in any other industry/sport if you wanted to start that industry/sport today.
if i and a group of other greyhound 'lovers' were to aproach the government today (imagine greyhound racing didnt exist today) with a plan to race greyhounds and it was discovered as a by product of our plan would be the over breeding of dogs where those not up to racing would be killed we wouldnt get beyond the front door.
its only because there is 1, money involved and 2. people have built their livliehoods around this industry/sport that is stopping the end to this industry.
i do feel for those who will lose their incomes from this ban but if your business has as a base the killing of the excess dogs then your business in criminal.

looks like new zealand also has a problem with 'wastage' in its racing industry.
Greyhound Racing New Zealand (GRNZ) chief executive Phil Holden said he did not want to comment on euthanasia because he did not know how prevalent it was.
this is outragious, theres guys who are supposed to be in chage are getting away with saying 'they dont know' how many dogs are being killed.
we got the same excuses from the similar 'in charge' cretins in australia.
its like its best not to know these things, so if we dont know that makes it ok.
fingers crossed newzealand bans the industry too.

the first link, good
the second, hmm, seems we missed the point again here,
"But what about euthanasia?" Well, I hate to break it to you, dogs, cats, cattle etc. are not human. And despite your moral objections on the subject, euthanasia is --and always will be -- an appropriate medical treatment to end the pain and/or suffering of an animal. And in some respects, they are luckier than we are. It's the reason for the whole "right to die" movement. And as my vet says, "Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should." My point? Is it right to euthanize a healthy animal without any sort of medical condition? Many of you will scream, "No." Yet, it happens every day in shelters across this nation, and no one says a word or passes legislation to stop it. But you cry foul, when a greyhound-- through his own judgment -- has an accident, and the owner opts --on rare occasion -- to end the dog’s pain and suffering through a medically approved and humane measure such as euthanasia. What is wrong with you people? It's the owner's right. You wouldn't want someone telling you when it's time to euthanize your dog. Why do you do it to them? Why do you make a hard decision harder by judging them? I've seen trainers cry over the loss of one of one of their hounds, and what you're doing isn't right.
i dont have a problem with anyone putting an ill or injured animal to sleep.
this lady never mentions the thousands of HEALTHY dogs euthanised in the WASTAGE erea! so she gets a big fat ZERO in her blog from me.
she puts on her "rose coloured glasses" when she says "they either race or they don't. those that dont go off to a happy life in adoption" yeah right dear.
none of the other links add anything i havent heard before, but of course no mention of "WASTAGE"
ive said it before, when those who like to greyhound race can prove they can reduce killing of "wastage" dogs has been eliminated you will have one guy who is no longer yelling "SHUT THIS INDUSTRY DOWN"
very simple really, STOP THE KILLING OF HEALTHY DOGS COMPLETELY
and dont cry, but what about all the cats and dogs destroyed every year in the pet area.
how does that help the greyhound cause? saying its ok to kill one group of animals (and its not) but not ours?
the pet industry need super reforms too, no doubt about that.

I know a guy who raised a greyhound from a pup who went on to become a champion in Queensland. He retired it earlier than usual and the dog was to live the rest of it's life as the family pet. Unfortunately it developed a fatal disease and after great cost to try and save it, the dog died a few months after retirement. The guy had tears streaming down his face when he told me about the dog's fate.
So there are some decent and loving greyhound owners hidden amongst the cruel, brutal and greedy ones.
