It's 'new' -  well, it's me 50 years ago.

Don't know if I like it yet though - might go back

No, I think you are wrong.

The original equation was stated without using brackets, so the equation is solved by doing everything in a strictly linear fashion.

7+7÷7+7x7-7 = ?

7+7=14÷7=2+7=9x7=63-7= 56

See?

(you can't add the brackets in later, that's not fair as it changes the outcome) 😉

The answer is 50 according to the mathmatical order of operations known as B.O.D.M.A.S. which operates irrespective of brackets.

Thanks Gkam.  I finally get it!  I am hopeless at maths and didn't understand the BODMAS thing properly before but now I see how it's done.

Thank goodness my boys were good at maths and didn't need help with homework.

Im with you J*oono..

When I was at school, it used to do my head in trying to work it out, but once you see the rule laid out, its like a fog lifted..my son is a wiz with maths and physics- way way above my head, but he sees relationships and remembers rules with ease..and he explained the BODMAS rule to me.

Very humbling when your young son explains a mystery to you in a simple way which blows your mind...Woman LOL
