But nothing in the article says he will be.
He's a lost cause IMO, he will never be rehabilitated, and it looks like crime is a lifestyle for him.
He's 17 yo

I remember the account at the time of his arrest.
I also seem to recall CCTV of the scuffle outside the apartment, but I can't locate the report.
He was id'd as an African teenager at that time.
At least 12 people are assisting the Homicide squad with inquiries but the alleged offender was not believed to be among them, police said. It’s not yet clear if the two groups were previously known to each other. Mr Hansen said the only known link so far was that both groups were of “African-Australian heritage” and all members aged around 19-20 years old.
And people are still afraid in the SE suburbs of Sudanese/African gangs, as far as I'm aware.

Just because he may be of African heritage does not mean he was not born here, and is a product of Australian society. Even if he came here as a small child, he is still product of our society.

That could be so, which is where the legalities come in and would be interesting to know. I am with imastawka. It doesn't matter what nationality or race anyone is, as long as they are law abiding.
Unfortunately, this horror of a youth is anything but and isn't likely to change.
If he was born here, then we're stuck with him but he should be put away forever, not just 5 or 10 years or whatever they seem to serve as life these days.
If, however, he does not have Australian citizenship or was not born here and we can get rid of him, excellent. Let him serve a sentence here but face compuslory deportation the day he is released.
We can't get rid of every serious criminal this way, but where it is possible, we should. There's no advantage in keeping him and possibly every disadvantage. Doesn't matter what race he is or where he is from, but if it is overseas then they can have him back.
