This is happening more and more, young 13-17 year olds, its scary stuff at the moment, I've never been strict on making sure doors are locked at night but I will be from now on.  Americans would say this is why we have guns to protect ourselves, I hope it doesn't come to that here.

Adelaide was the home invasion capital of Australia in the nineties and nobody gave a rats about it.
Now it is being used for political point scoring

Definitely seems to be on the rise.

I have strengthened the front door and put a strong security screen on as well.

I now have an extendable police type baton next to my bed for defence.

(would never have thought of this before)

If someone comes in with a knife, I want to make sure my stick is longer than his.

And I will break both his hands if need be.

Mines a lump of 1 inch steel water pipe with a manky old tap on the end. There was a fire in the carport of a new house being built out the back of our place a couple of years ago. It was the chairs off our back deck. Some a$$h0!e teenager stole them and lit them up for fun. They didnt hang around though when I opened the roller door and rushed at them screaming profanities with the lump of pipe in hand  .............................................. I have to say my attitudes towards Sudanese refugees has softened tremendously since a personal experience. I had cause to regularly visit a secure psychiatric ward of our states children's hospital. One of the young people there was a young Sudanese girl around twelve years old. The poor thing was living completely in a world of her own, constantly reliving horrors of past experience. She just wandered around, eyes blank, not aware of her surroundings regularly crying out and recounting obvious atrocities, committed against loved ones.

Her mother and very young sister came to visit her daily, but she was unaware of their presence. They where immaculately dressed, probably wealthy, judging by their attire and both mother and young daughter appeared exceptionally intelligent. I never saw any males come to the hospital and wonder if this is the cause of the girls distress. All up it was heart wrenching to see.

I think it is a tough question. The media will pick on whatever they think is newsworthy.

In that report it says African crimes are over reported, compared to everything else that goes before a court.

Now that may be true, but it is also true (as in the report) that they represent only 0.1% of the population yet are involved in 1% of the crimes. Mainly African male youths. So that's currently running at 10 times the number of crimes you would expect, given their population numbers.

That's a huge discrepancy. And I do think it is important it is open for discussion, open for reporting, because unless we know where there are problems, we can't even begin to fix them. Reporting the figures does not mean anyone is accusing every African of being a criminal.

The main reason their crimes get more media coverage is because of the nature of the crimes-gang problems, home invasions, car jackings etc. If a person (any person) is caught shoplifting, it isn't going to make the news. Doesn't matter what colour or nationality it is. If one person leaves graffiti or as happened to chameleon, destroys some property, it probably won't make the news. If you get domestic violence, it probably won't make the news, not unless someone is killed.

But if you get a large gang walk into shops and walk out with thousands of dollars of electronic equipment because in a group they intimidate staff, if you get gangs that walk into petrol station serving centres and just take whatever they want from the shelves (which is happening in a couple of suburbs near here on a regular basis), if you get people's homes being invaded or cars hijacked (always with a weapon such as a baseball bat and quite often a gun), then those things are going to hit the media whoever does them.

They hit the news because the victims are random and the crimes are frightening.

I also believe the crimes keep happening because the youths involved don't have respect for the law and they don't suffer any consequences for their actions. Till they do have some fear of consequences, it will keep on happening. That goes for any type of criminal behaviour by anyone at all. Consequences will never stop all of it, but it would stop quite a bit of it.

That is a very misleading as far as the fear of African kids goes.  They are responsible for only 1% of the comparable crimes = basically that means that if you get mugged or somebody breaks into your house it is 99% of the time ordinary white Aussie kids.

Earlier this year there was a riot on StKilda beach; that is only few hundred yards from where my daughter lives.  She saw bands of kids running around and they were all white, later reported as mainly British backpackers, but the footage on TV only showed close up of couple of Sudanese girls fighting with white girls, and the rest of the footage was from distance in dark, and you could not make up the color of their skin.  But the headlines were "Sudanes gangs"

No, it is not misleading at all. They comprise 0.1% of the population yet are involved in 1% of the comparable crimes.

That is still 10 times more than you would expect, given their population numbers.

Whichever way you swing it, there is more likelihood (percentage wise) of an African youth being involved in crimes like these than another youth. Raw figures are misleading. Of course 99% are not African youths & that is because across the population as a whole, there are more non African youths.

That's not to say the media don't sensationalise things when it suits them,  but I don't think we gain anything by putting our heads in the sand.

We have gang problems in Melbourne, that's the bottom line. And it isn't getting better because the youths involved basically get away with it most of the time, no consequences. That goes if they are black, white or purple.

But we also have a problem with African youths at the moment as they are over represented in the crime statistics. That needs to be addressed too.

The thing is that if they are black they are more likely to be caught, they are so much more visible.  If white kid does something, he will just blend into the crowd.  While 6ft4 black kid just sticks out.
The point I was making is that people are terrified of  Sudanese kids, while as I already said,  99 times out of hundred attacks/robberies are done by white youth.  Yes, proportionally it should be 99.9 out of hundred, but in the past it was UK and NZ citizens who were over represented in crime statistics, yet nobody was writing headlines about NZ or UK gangs.
