Not for hobby sellers whose turnover is less than $10 000 p.a.
Especially if that person has no other income. $18 000+ tax free threshold
Excluding working aged people in receipt of Centrlink pensions - they have obligations to Centrlink to report all earnings.

to chameleon: who came on like the local thread police...... blustering a wind bag full about ATO tax obligations.......as if people here don't already know already.......
anyway regards this lil bit:
.....If a person is running a substantial business with dozens of sales every week and making many hundreds ( or thousands ) of dollars profit, they should be paying their fair share to the ATO. There are growing numbers of genuine people in need of community support ( read social security ). They can only get a fair go, if the fit and healthy do their bit by paying their share of tax rather than bludging off of the others, who work hard and support the wider community through paying tax.
Sorry, I just havnt got much time for useless bludgers.
.................................................................................................................................................................................
what if the entity is not a person but a large multinational company - that is:
'running a substantial business with dozens of sales every week and making many hundreds ( or thousands ) of dollars profit, should they too be paying their fair share to the ATO?'
I do think so, so why isn't EBAY paying the ATO any tax for making GAZILLIONS EVERY YEAR in Australia from Australians?????!!
Suggest you go and post your shy te in the 'fun and games' section next time

paintsew007, My appologies, I thought the forums where a place where people try to assist each other. You know.... ask genuine questions and recieve factual answers ......... My mistake.
As to your comments regards huge multinationals such as ebay, google and probably most of our major mining companies and wealthy individuals, who funnel their money through offshore bank accounts, I couldnt agree with you more. Our Governments ( of all colours ) have become hooked on the donations from the wealthy elite to the point that they corruptly turn a blind eye to these organisations who refuse to pay the social dividend that they should. This makes them THE BIGGEST BLUDGERS OF THE LOT !
paintsew007 - if youve finished your little tanty, might I respectfully suggest a nice cup of tea and a little lie down for awhile.

As I have stated.....I was not having a 'tanty' and my knickers are fresh on and definitely no knots!
I am appalled that ebay and other multi-nationals is/are permitted/are allowed by this Australian Govt to operate in Australia where they don't have to pay tax.....
so I use a few large text fonts.....whoopty. You wanna see a 'tanty' I suggest you accuse and heckle someone else aps. Now run along there's a good boy LOL

Paint
means LOL, as in joke.
Or in your case, I should put "Hook, line and sinker" since you bite so well.
As for "I am appalled that ebay and other multi-nationals is/are permitted/are allowed by this Australian Govt to operate in Australia where they don't have to pay tax....."
I think you'll find it is not something that Australia alone can do, it is something needing to be addressed by all major Gov'ts of the G20 type and they are addressing it slowly but it is very complicated.
The companies apply the law as it is written in front of them, with of course as Kerry Pakcer said, "your a fool if you are not trying to minimise tax" or words to that affect.
Now, be a good girl, Have a cup of tea, a Bex and a good lie down
