How terror threats have changed my outlook on life.

During the period of the Martin Place siege at the Lindt cafe, my son, DIL and infant granddaughter were in lock up in seperate buildings for many hours.
I was terrified until I found out that they were safe.
Last week they were again locked down when another siege threat was made in Phillip Street.
This time I was merely concerned, not terrified.
When and how did the unthinkable in this country become the acceptable.
That in itself is terrifying.

I agree am*3
My aunty and her daughter (my cousin) were shot at in the car park of Port Arthur. They were lucky enough to escape, but they had a bullet hole in their car door as they drove away. It instilled a worried fear in our family for a long time. We will never forget!

My son was held up in his place of work during the Martin Place seige mostly because his BLEEP BLEEP boss wouldnt let them leave, despite evacuation orders. I was panick stricken for several hours, and i was texting him all the news updates.
We will never forget!

Madman with an agenda, instilling fear into civilised folk. When it becomes *personal* in one way or another, then it changes your views a little.

I dont believe Australia has had any real threat of actual terrorism .....yet!!
....but im not going to shrug it off and pretend that it isnt just sitting around the corner either.

So far,  we have been lucky really........

What many of you miss is that the world will never go back to pre 9/11.

We are in the midst of an Islamic uprising the likes of which we have never seen before. It will end up in a war that will engulf  the Middle East and could precipitate a nuclear incident.

The nit picking of the many on here trying to keep their heads wedged firmly in the sand because we have "only" experienced a couple of "minor" terrorists events and making comparisons to excuse those attacks is alarming to read.

The mealy mouthed criticism of the PM who is in the midst of  doing everything a good and responsible PM should be doing at a time like this is sickening.

What is he supposed to do? hide under the bed, don't "offend" anyone and hope that it will all go away.

We are not privy to any information he may be getting, we are not privy to anything at all but we are privy to the sensible warnings he gives to radicalized Muslims not to go and join ISIS because as we can see they are the one's being used for "cannon fodder".

They are the one's ISIS are using as suicide bombers and they are the one's beheaded   if they find that it's not all that exciting and want to come home.

What many are missing that since WW2 there have been at any time about 40 wars going on, while we were blissfully unaware, or at least felt it has nothing to do with us.  Albeit USA and therefore we, were involved one way or another.  Th world has not changed so much, it just that 9/11 brought the reality home to us.

Those who decide IS is not what they want, and would like to come home are not likely to be much danger.

Our cause is not being done any favours by not being told the whole complicated and unpalatable truth.  There are still civilians caught in the middle, Al-Assad is still the same bleep he was few years ago when we called ISIS freedom fighters.  Al-Assad is still bombing civilian areas with gas, except now we do not hear about it.  There are millions of Syrian refuges living in tent cities with no hope of going back and no hope of finding other place they could settle.  It is a humanitarian disaster on scale we never seen before.

And by the way; who is still selling weapons to ISIS, and how come that this little landlocked area is able to export gas to finance itself?

Your point is?

My opinion is that  many of you on here constantly rush to make comparisons with historic facts that have nothing to do with present day terrorism. It's like you are defending a terrorist cadre that is a massive threat to the world, not just us.

Why are you doing this? it's  something a few of us on here would like to know? , your motives?  and not another "comparison" to ameliorate the threat of radical Islamic terrorism that is a world wide threat.

I am just putting this "incredible global threat" into perspective.   There are about 80 000 of ISIS fighting, and there are few more supporters/sympathisers around the world.  That is out of 1.6billions of Muslims worldwide and  7+billion of people on Earth.  Have you stopped to think why is it that US and allies are not able to stop ISIS, or at least prevent them from selling oil and buy weapons and supplies?

Why are you concentrating on this one threat? There are much more serious threats to our civilization.   Like inability of feeding ourselves, and have access to water; and millions of people moving around the globe escaping the areas where there is a war and/or famine.

There have always been terrorist attacks; IRA not so long ago, I do not recall them being turned into anti catholic campaigns.

The reason why I have addressed this threat is because of the topic??? hello

More comparisons?? The IRA was not a global threat.

It's estimated that there's 10% to 15% Muslims fighting and 20% to 30% who support the terrorists.

Extrapolate that by the 7.5 billion Muslims and there are millions directly and indirectly involved in this uprising.

Millions supporting ISIS and millions being so called radicalised when in fact many support ISIS.

Re: How terror threats have changed my outlook on life.

for many of us who either live close to

or work in major cities - the not IF but WHEN

is definitely a concern.

it is because of the nature of this constant threat -

suicide attacks are designed to have maximum

exposure which means we no longer look at public

places as the safest place to be in.  these terrorists

intend to die in the process so choosing  a busy,

public place is obviously not a deterrent.

so far our authorities have been able to stop planned

terror attacks in australia but they can't stop them all.

i dont blame our current government and i dont blame

the previous government's stance on terrorism.

isis and its supporters use it as their justification.

i like what julia gillard said recently while backing

hillary clinton:

Ms Gillard also said that electing Ms Clinton as president would send a powerful message to terrorist group ISIS that subjugation of women would not be tolerated.

“Of the things that are being fought over in this security situation, pivotal to them is women’s rights and women’s roles,” Ms Gillard said.

“[Isis] is a philosophy that has at its core the subjugation of women.

“So to be able, in the world in which we live today with those security challenges, to see a great democracy elect a woman to lead it would be a real statement.

“[Isis’s philosophy] is anathema to everything I believe in and it’s anathema to everything Hillary stands for.”
