Debra
Why is it up to the Gov't to keep the ship building industry afloat ?
We have a small Navy, very small navy.
Their is nothing stopping these ship building companies from going and winning business overseas.
But I doubt they would win much unless it was Australian Gov't subsidised.
We only keep the ship building industry afloat by giving away our oold ships to neighbouring countries
"as foreign aid" so we can build new ones.
Althiough the left complain when we do give ships away to Sri Lanka !

isn't a govt supposed to support it's own people & it's own local industry?

Up to a point.
But you can't build boats for building sake only, you do need to have a use for them.
And if the cost is that much higher than pre packaged, off the shelf, how much extra is it worth,
ESPECIALLY with our track record of failures and huge cost overuns because we THINK we can
do it better than they can.
SeaSprite being ONE very good Example.
Buying Tiger being another, just because they had some local build component in it.
Jobs for the boys for jobs sake smacks of welfare jobs to me.

for example the car manufacturing industry in Vic, though these companies wanted subsidies to continue.. they employed real Australian people whose wages went back into our economy, so it was a good investmenst
the submarines.... I was just reading this morning that the shipbuilding industry is in trouble too
Destroying Australias manufacturing started long before this government took office, thanks Deb. My job was one of many that went bye byes thanks to Messrs Hawke and Keatings tariff reforms.
Making a blank statement like Mr Abbott is now targetting welfare and pensioners is disingenous.
Australia has a huge welfare bill that needs to be addressed and it's not old pensioners that are being targetted, it's the ppl rorting the disability and single parent pensions that will need re-assessing. Like our charming Mr Siege Gunman Monis who had been living on welfare since his arrival in Australia. Case like that need target with the pointy end of a big stick IMO.

There aren't enough jobs unfortunately. This government is wasting far too much money that could be invested in job creation.
THIS Government is wasting money?!!!????
No mention of the previous goverment's profligate and unproductive spending which has left the current government with a huge budget deficit.
What a tiny little box you're living in!

He was on welfare for a lot of the time. He hadn't worked for 10 years.
The pr ick was also given legal aid to fight the charges he was on for writing letters to the sodliers families.
That is apart form the fact he was let in in the first place, was granted bail and god knows how many other
actions that allowed him to get away with stuff.
He didn't exactly seem happy to be here so why let him stay - and that should apply to anyone who advocates
Jihad and Sharia Law.
