Human waste as fertilizer

I know it has been used for thousands of years but I don't think I want to eat products that use it.

Human waste as fertilizer

I have just listened to an ABC radio program. A bloke who lived in China for 10 years explained the human waste deal. During winter months 'nightsoil' is emptied at the end of residential alleyways until the spring when it is taken to spread on vegie etc crops. He said the cone of nightsoil reaches about a metre and a half high, by several metres around. We all need to have that image in our heads when we are doing the weekly shop. I know I will never forget it. lol.

Its called satire, which is almost dead on CS amlong with humour and banter.

The round table and CS in its early days had a scattering of all those elements.

For it to be satire, by definition, it must be funny.

Associated health risks

The mixture of urine and faeces should never be used as it not only smells foul but also the slurry produced by this mixture has a high number of enteric micro-organisms. Urine can be treated by storing it separately for a period of six months; this makes it free of bacteria and safe for use in the fields. By consistently following these procedures, the presence of enteric bacteria, viruses, protozoa and helminth eggs in faeces can be fully controlled.

Some possible diseases due to partial treatment and unsafe use of night-soil compost are amoebic dysentery, human tapeworm, cholera or viral hepatitis. Safe and hygienic use of night-soil compost is important for protecting the health of the users, as well as the environment. In order to prevent diseases, proper management of night-soil and its treatment are essential. So for proper conversion of night-soil into compost, a series of control measures need to be followed. The World Health Organization has also produced guidelines relating to the safe use of wastewater, excreta and greywater (see Box).

As long as it went through the full cycle of composting I think I'd be ok with it ,but the trouble is I'd take some convincing that it had.

There are some very good schemes for dealing with sewage in a completely natural way, but as already mentioned when money comes into the equation corners can start getting cut.

Yes, it would have to be a system you know is operated properly.
