The Woolies in our town, put in self serve a few months ago. They needed them too, as they never used to have enough check outs open and the queues were awful (esp in touristy/holiday periods).

I like doing (most of) my groceries on line. I alternate between the big 2 because there's always a few things they don't carry and I've found doing it this way, they both send me offers in their "off" week for free delivery, $50 off if I spend more tha $180 (very substantial), and assorted gimmicks to win me back.....
I'm really enjoying playing one off against the other and working the system to suit me. I have 3 teenagers and a husband who all indulge in competition level eating and having a big, strong supermarket employee deliver the lot into my kitchen (high set house) in about 7 minutes flat is wonderful....

I used to say that too but standing in line behind someone with a shopping trolley full of groceries at one of only 2 manned checkouts in your lunch hour while the time is ticking away is kind of a decider.
And well management know it.

I 'know' that store managers at Woolies get a bonus - was $30,000 per annum 2 years ago, if they don't go 'over' their allocated budget for staffing work hours.

yeh i don't think so
no store manager would get a bonus anywhere near that.
and especially for just meeting a single criteria

They will if they are keeping the staffing budget down by more than that - simple economics. I now quite a few people working in Human Resources/staff management whose bonuses are directly tied to saving the company money (without sacrificing profits obviously).

What I really don't like is the people that have a full trolley load and they are using the self serve. It's crazy and it takes them five times as long as if they go to a checkout operator.
That's the thing I dislike about self serve checkouts too, I asked at my local Woollies if they could ban it as the setup isn't designed for trolleys but they said they can't they have to allow all through it but they knew what I meant. Last time I used self serve with people there using full trolley loads a lady kept pushing her trolley into me so I requested she cease and decist or it would get re-arranged in a place she wouldn't like.
Half the problem is they won't open up checkouts so sometimes people are forced with full trolleys to use them.
I mostly go to my local Coles now as they don't have the self serve and have registers open without any song and dance about it unlike Woollies.

I didn't mean to speak for Woolies, but both my daughter (Human Resources Manager for a VERY large Aust Co) and S-I-L (Accountant managing large Hotel group) are under 30, being paid $200K each, with bonuses of the scale discussed, directly tied to performance judged in part on economic savings for the company.

Manager in Supermarket would want to save more than $30 000 in wages for a year if their bonus is $30 000.

Maybe that's why they don't roster enough people on,.
Everyone grumbles about not enough checkouts open.
Got their beady eye on that bonus
