We have a family member who works in management of a large Supermarket chain.
For them their stores work hours are set by a system which decides what hours are needed by previous sales.
To be entitled to the bonuses it involved much more than just keeping wages under.

Everyone grumbles about not enough checkouts open.
Yes. That is where the self serve checkouts come into it. 6 or so checkouts with ONE staff person, overviewing them, here to help with any problems.
I think my nearest Coles have managed to fit in at least 10 self-serves now in the same space since they replaced a few of the older ones with slimmer, card only ones.

My Woolies only just managed to stop a guy who filled up
a plastic bag with vitamins and health stuff and weighed them
in as brown onions - $1.89 kilo!
Now they have 2 people overseeing the self serve and
1 less manned checkout

That's just plain silly
on both sides! If you're gonna be shifty, keep a low profile lol.

Yeah, but it's directly opposite Centrelink, so lotsa drop-kicks
I actually go to another suburb now. One of the checkout chicks was
next door's SIL and kept telling me their business.
I think she may have been 'trying to warn me' that they were gay. lol
Such a pain, she was

I have read in news articles that supermarkets are well aware some self-serve customers will rip them off, by choosing a cheaper option instead of the correct one, when weighing their own items etc. They say though, the savings from having less staff, far exceeds any losses they have from customers ripping them off at the self-serve.
It would be a huge savings in wages, if you have 6 self serve counters open with 1 staff member attending to them.
I go to a few diff supermarkets, never seen more than 1 staff at the self serve, but I don't go in really busy times, or to really busy supermarkets.

No self service check outs in my local Woolies, not sure re Coles as I never shop there, I mainly shop at Aldi, just grab the odd thing at Woolworths. They are all a 30km drive away, so I don't get to any of them all that often.

I have never used a self serve checkout although I hear they are great for shoplifting.
