I Helped An Elderly Gent Yesterday.

In the Supermarked. I was doing some fruit and veg shopping and noticed him struggling to open the produce bag. I've struggled with them before so I wondered if I should help him or would he feel I was being patronised.

As I walked past him I jokingly said, "you have to spit on it"! I always wet my thumb and index finger to open the bags.

We laughed and he went pretendy "ptui ptui" on the bag.

I went around and got some tomatoes and deliberated whether I should get the lemons from USA or limes from Aus.

When I looked up he was still patiently struggling with the bag.

I felt bad then about the flippant spit comment and said "can I help you"? He gave me the bag and I showed him how I lick my thumb and finger and the bag opened straight away! (It's not always that easy).

Anyway we had shared another laugh about it and went about our shopping.

I had to get the fruit and veg guy to help me with mine once.

Lick your finger and thumb?

Sorry, but I find that disgusting.

I saw a lady do that once and then she mauled all the tomatoes.

When she finally chose one, I asked her if I could lick it for her, seeing

as how she handled all of the tomatoes with spit fingers!

Community Service award for you, icy.

I just rub the bag with my thumb and index finger on one opening corner that seems to get the open.

Woolies, where I shop, now has green coloured bags for fruit & veg.

They have a dispenser that tears them and the tear makes them soo easy to open

Re: I Helped An Elderly Gent Yesterday.

That was kind of you to help and I'm sure he felt grateful, but licking your fingers in a supermarket? Yuk...those trolleys and shelves are germy. I actually had a discussion in my supermarket last week about this....me and another woman were struggling with the bags and she commented how she doesn't like to lick her fingers to open them.

I usually go to the veggie that sit on ice and open several bags,...or try not to use the bags at all.

Re: I Helped An Elderly Gent Yesterday.

My mother is 85 and doesn't take any regular medication because she has nothing wrong with her and she is a licker, be it money or bags or shopping lists or magazines, lick, lick, lick all the way around the supermarket with me trailing along using my best nagging voice " would you stop licking your fingers, please" and then I roll my eyes skywards.

Shopping with my mother really hurts my eyes because I must have to roll them at least 20 times around the supermarket.
