I Helped An Elderly Gent Yesterday.

In the Supermarked. I was doing some fruit and veg shopping and noticed him struggling to open the produce bag. I've struggled with them before so I wondered if I should help him or would he feel I was being patronised.

As I walked past him I jokingly said, "you have to spit on it"! I always wet my thumb and index finger to open the bags.

We laughed and he went pretendy "ptui ptui" on the bag.

I went around and got some tomatoes and deliberated whether I should get the lemons from USA or limes from Aus.

When I looked up he was still patiently struggling with the bag.

I felt bad then about the flippant spit comment and said "can I help you"? He gave me the bag and I showed him how I lick my thumb and finger and the bag opened straight away! (It's not always that easy).

Anyway we had shared another laugh about it and went about our shopping.

I had to get the fruit and veg guy to help me with mine once.

I usually shop at Coles but I love the new green veggie bag dispensers that they are using in Woolies these days.  They are so much easier.  Is it true that the green plastic keeps the fruit and veg fresh for longer?

The green veggie bags at Woolies are the best thing.   They not only keep veggies

longer but are bio-degradeable, breaking down in sunlight very quickly.

No lick spits at Woolies - they open themselves when you take one off the roll

I think some are pointing out icy, that you licked your fingers and put them on another persons bag, therefore leaving your saliva on their bag. They could have touched the bit your licked fingers touched, then put their own finger in their mouth for some reason and got your germs (if you had any).

I doubt the bags have germs on them. Ours are on a roll, you rip one off. The next bag will only be touched by the person using it.

ewww girl germs, I seriouly doubt he would care

l'd be more concerned about where my fingers have been

i mean, driving to the shopping centre the steering wheel and gear knob could use a clean and a armerall

inspecting items before you buy, heaven knows whats on them

and always leave the fruit n veg section till last cos otherwise theyll get squashed in the bottom of the trolley

thats the only reason I avoid licking my fingers to open plasic bags

Signatures suck.

@Heart @ Gilly thanks for your concern. I think with all the spitting on the fingers at supermarkets my immunity should be pretty resistant to any errant bacteria.
