I met another amazing person today.

Campbell Newman......

He has come to Bundaberg many times since the floods along with Tony Abbott... KRudd is yet to visit once... and since Rudd did not sign off on a lot of relief  money he probably won't be well received if he does visit.

Anyway.. back to Mr Newman.... he has made some fantastic changes for our region and today he made a big announcement today that will create 500 jobs for the area...

I was very impressed with Mr Newman and feel very happy that my vote went to such an amazing man.

And for those that want to cry about the cuts I suggest you all look at the latest stats and see how much QLD has grown in the last 12 or so months. Jobs and growth are above and beyond what the rest of the countries growth has been.

what concerns me with that sentence is the whole insurance thing.

There are many reasons people don't have insurance for floods... the laws were changed and now when you have insurance for floods you are covered for all floods.. but those laws came in on July 1st last year.. many of these people were still on their old insurance coverage that would have been taken out before July. I know 4 people that thought they were covered but missed out by just a few days...

many people were also from a very low socio economic area... they often cannot afford insurance. they might struggle to pay off a home in a more vulnerable area just so that they can get on the home owner market. They are the hardest hit.

There were also a lot of renters in that area and they often don't have insurance.. they lost it all... and they can't afford to pay the rent in other homes as the rents all went up after the damage to 2000 homes.. we just don't have that many rental properties to cover the overflow.

And to the other poster about 35 dead in the previous flood.. yep.. that was a tragedy... but that does not lessen the flooding we have had here... it does not mean that the heartache and saddness for the people here is lessened. People are struggling to get back on their feet... mental illness is a huge problem... suicide is also a huge problem...you come up here and tell those people that the floods were not as bad as last time.

Crikey, I know I;m about to wade into a bloodbath here and Iza's about to jump on me but *shrugs*

Insurance is right up there with food and air (as many poeople have found) If you have property whether it be a sleeping bag or a mansion, you also need to factor in the cost of insuring it as well. Just like home ownership comes with the responsibility for rates and maintenance etc. I don't get the mentality that "I want something, so I'm gonna have it even though I can't meet all my obligations cos the gov will help me out with the shortfall"(and I mean that across the board, not just for insurance)

I will never understand someone owning something and not insuring it after spending so much money on it. It's kinda like, I really wanted a BMW, but apart from the fact it was a hundred grand more than I could afford, even if I could have scraped together the money for it, there was no way I could have afforded the maintenance and insurance of it etc - so I chose something within my budget.

And if the laws changed last July, I'm sorry, but there is no excuse for not ensuring you were adequately insured in the next 6 months, especially after the previous warning.

I don't see why the government should pay to compensate people for their own stupidity or carelessness.

Don't get me wrong, I really do feel for those that have been affected by all this, but there are steps they could have taken to minimize the fallout - I don't see why the gov should have to step in and help out that sort of stuff. Yep, they need to step in and help get it sorted, you know the public property, emergency short term accommodation etc and make sure the hospitals and roads etc are able to cope with the recovery - but  - dunno how to word it. - not hand out a few thousand dollars cos people got inconvenienced or didn't take adequate steps to insure themselves.

I dunno, but maybe some of the political campaign money would have been better spent getting a roof over a few people's heads, eh? Buying a few blankets...

Yeah, the available of rental properties would be rough - I get that,

Catmad, I hope that you get your membership sorted ...maybe they are being kind to you and not charging as you aren't earning hundreds of thousands ?

I hoe they sort it out too...

will be my first job on Wednesday to call and fix it up...

I am looking forward to being very invloved with the party... we have a lot of fundraising to do as the coffers are empty after this massive election... time to build the war chest for future elections. I can't believe how much money is spent and it then starts all over again.

hang on, so you have to pay a membership fee to join an organization to help them to fundraise for their advertising campaign?

OK, so people fundraise to pay for an advertising campaign whilst there are still people unable to go live in their houses after a natural disaster.... seems to me there are some mixed up priorities.

you can't take the money raised for the party and donate it to another cause... there are laws in place... very strong laws to make sure the money is allocated appropriately. Money is actually locked away in special accounts.

Political donations are very tightly watched in the LNP so that things like what happened in the AWU don't happen.

you missed my point.

People only have so much money. They just can't afford to give to every charity or fundraiser.

There is a lot of emotion about the people who are still recovering from the floods, yet the politicians think it's ok to direct money away from that in order to print a few more pamphlets? And the people who donate think it's better to give to an advertising campaign then to their neighbours...

That's ok, people should be able to spend their money on what they like (once their own obligations have been met) but then I think it's a bit rough that they then turn around and pull out the old emotive rhetoric about their poor neighbour who is still recovering from the floods and the Gov should fix it....

IMO - if there are people in the dire circumstances that you descrtibe, then any money being redirected away from them is wrong. That's kinda like the person weho buys ciggies or grog rather than feed their kids, eh?

hey look, there are 2000 people who still don't have anywhere to live, but lets forget about them, eh? Give the money to me instead so I can pay for a bit more advertising...

CM... I agree with you about being responsible for yourself and looking after what you have however this is a very different area to the rest of the country... we have an unemployment rate that is one of the highest in the country right now..

It is well proven that if things are going well around the country we have the best unemplyment rate.. when the rest of the country had 4.5% in our area we actually had 3.4%... the best in the whole country... when things go rough we have the highest, when it was at 6.5% we had 10.2%.. it was the worst in the country.

Insurance is something that people can drop when they cna't put food on the table.

I have grown to really love this area.. they people have good hearts and work hard for what they have .. I feel for them when things get tough and think that society has an obligation to look after the battlers.

As for the donations.. are you assuing that people give to the party and not to the struggling people??? I know for a fact that many people donate to both.

so the lie about the co2 tax would be wrong in your eyes then??

And the disunity in the Labor party and the dishonest comments about not going after Gillard or Rudd would be very upsetting to you then?? The leaks against the ALP party then would have upset you then??

And you would have voted accordingly I suppose?
