Hey everyone
I need to know if any Tarjay stores in Australia have public toilets? I have never been in a Tarjay that had thier own public toilets, yet an insufferable know it all co-worker says that most stores do.

Just hang around here for a while and you will see that the ratio of male to female, of what are classed as 'know it alls' are heavily weighted towards the female end of the scale 🙂
I will put my hand up as being an insufferable know it all at times

While we're on the subject, have you ever physically assaulted a man?
That is if you consider slapping a man, assault...

forget getting logical. point me to the section
of the law where it says stand alone stores must
have public toilets.
Section 1428.1 2001 of the Australian Standards which needs to be read in conjunction with the NCA booklet (what used to be called the Building Code of Australia) in the section on sanitary facilities related to Class 6 buildings.

Nope, never. I once pushed my little brother over and gave him carpet burn when I was 7 and he was 5.....would that count?

thank you. is this it?
6. Sanitary facilities for public—sanitary facilities need not be provided for the public in—
(a) a Class 6 building used as a department store or shopping centre if the building accommodates less than 600 persons;
would that be why so many dept stores
don't have public toilets ???

As I said you need to read the NCA in conjunction with the other acts. You have taken one line out of context and which twists the facts.
The exact ruling is that a single store on ground level that accommodates more than 600 people must have a toilet. The rules then refers you to a clause in section D (can't remember what part as my books are at work) that says to calculate how many people, assume for every m2 that 3 people will fit.
The average Target size is 5000m2.Then they need a public toilet. If they are smart they will make that public toilet a unisex accessible toilet that fits a wheelchair so that they also cover the section in the Australia Standards in section 1428.1. Otherwise they would need TWO toilets.
End of story.
Anyway. Not sure why I am arguing with you on this. It is part of what I do in my profession every day. And I've answered the OP.

For what it's worth, every Target I've been in here in the US has rest rooms available to the public, and they are ADA-compliant..........all of our supermarkets also have them avaiable to the public.
As for the town of Katherine permitting private businesses to charge for usage, from their description of the town's facilities, there must be some nasty denizens in that township........

lets use some logic here.
it makes no sense at all that a new store would
simply ignore the bca regulations with the council's
approval (see glee's post) so OBVIOUSLY it depends
on the size - which you have just confirmed so -
"By law any stand alone store has to have public accessible toilets"
is not necessarily correct.
and OBVIOUSLY those stores that are required by law
to have public toilets should have disabled toilet(s) and
adequate means for the disposal of sanitary towels.
NOW it makes sense why some new stores have public toilets
and some dont. you dont need to be an expert
ps what is NCA?

The target store I work at isn't 5000m2.
We'd also be lucky if 100 people could fit into our store at the same time
Anyway, thankyou everyone for your replies. Its been an interesting discussion

Some people are disgusting. I never use public toilets during or after a long weekend unless I know they have been cleaned that day. People will smear poop everywhere, leave used sanitary products anywhere. Some people don't even bother using the actual toilet, they will just go whereever they want.
