If you found a bag of money in the woods...

Let's say you were walking along a hiking trail with your dog and he runs off-track down a small dirt path that is really no more than beaten-down grass and you chase after him and find him digging at a plastic bag half exposed from our heavy downpours recently. Say, you pulled the bag out and inside was a clear plastic film containing hundreds of thousands of dollars of the old paper money which you count later, mainly in fifty dollar notes. Some of those big yellow notes are stained or ripped but most are in ok condition.

No 1, would you turn it in?

and

No 2, if you kept it, what on earth to do with it? Do banks still exchange old paper notes? Even if you only changed a few at a time and used different banks and branches, isn't there some kind of national register and wouldn't there be an alert at a sudden influx of old paper money?

What would you do?

What would you do with it? I mean, say there's $224,000 in fifty dollar notes, would you set up five different bank accounts and once a week make a deposit of $1-2,000 so that in a few years the money could be used legitimately? Or would you just waste the money on electrical goods, bottles of wine, meals and overnight stays at luxury hotels etc...

I love stories like that. Beats my $20, doesn't it?

How much did you get for the ring? Were you tempted not to hand it in? Where did you find it?

Really azureline? I didn't know that, I thought the police would seize it as suspected goods obtained by deception?

not unless you did something illegal? even then, there would possibly be a reward.

Hand it to the police.. leave my details.. follow it up later to see if it has been collected and hope that it was still there.

Money could be proceeds of crime...they  will not come and collect it.

If it belonged to a above board person then I would happy they got it back.. (I would hope for a reward)

Re: If you found a bag of money in the woods...

If the money has been buried for decades, it's obvious drug or bank robbery proceeds, blood money in other words. Since it's paper money, I wouldn't be worried about the "owner" trying to find me. He's probably dead or in jail. If it was new money, I would be laying away at night wondering if the thug who buried it  could somehow find me. I wouldn't tell anyone of course or spend lavishly, rather like a lottery winner who doesn't want greedy hangers-on to get wise.

If it was proceeds of crime, such as a bank hold-up, couldn't the serial numbers be traced to the event? I doubt very much the police would let me keep it although the bank might give me a reward.
