Integration etc

I was wondering on another thread what culture/ assimilation/ integration means, especially in regards to refugees, actually means. The meaning probably differs from person to person so I was wondering what other's interpretation are. Just wondering.

Integration means that ALL schoolchildren should stand for the Australian Anthem when it's sung at assembly or in class.

If that is a dig at the children who were allowed to leave a school assembly before the singing of the National anthem, it is a  bit disingenuous, Icy. It was one school, it  had nothing to do with the National Anthem per se and provoked the following response from Islamic community leaders.

You might, however,  like to take the issue up with the Jehovah's Witnesses.

It takes time to fit in and when you add trauma, such as what the majority of refugees have experienced, then it becomes even harder. Most don't have the luxury of time to do things such as research and learn a different language. It must be really hard andI don't know how I would do if I was in a similar situation.

Small online forums are just what you say, They are microcosms and really don't give a true representation of the wider population. .

What do mean by "desired" ethnic and religious backgrounds?

There is such a lot to be considdered about integration.

First of all the refugees come from wartorn countries and are ful of fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of Police and anyone in uniform. Fear of the future and being rejectec by the local communities. Gathering around other people who speak their language and understand their customs is a safeguard for them.

Then there is the problem with unemployed teenagers and young adults because their english is inadequate to employ them. So they gather in groups of others with a similar background and envy the ones that have more or better lifes. Most of them are poorly educated and don't know how to achieve what they want. Out of frustration they riot, steal and fall prey to drugs. Nothing makes them realise that integration and learning will make a better life than what they fled from.

The mentality of entitlement is something that has not helped anyone, and so problems arise.

The emigrants after WWII did not have such problems. Work was there for everyone. Most young people started work at 14 or 15 as apprentices or in factories. We were made welcome and had a lot of help from local communities. Learning english was paramount to be able to communicate with people from all sosts of different countries.

Today, newcomers do not understand that integration is vital for a good future in this country. The Government moves refugees from the same country in close neighbourhoods, thinking it will help them to settle easier. This is wrong. It does not give the newcomer an incentive to integrate with Australians.

Settle one family only in one town and they are forced to communicate with the locals. Integration will not occur where many families from the same country are settled in one place. They will stick together and expect to live the way they had in their home country.

Don't blame the newcomers. They don't know any better, and pandering to their demands is not helping them or anyone else. Educating them about integration and the benefits it brings would be a start.

I am not often anywhere that the national anthem is played. I don't even when I last was, except  for when my kids were in school. The only time that I hear the national anthem is on the TV and, no, I don't stand up for it  then. I can't say that I even know all of the words, especially the second verse . except for " for those who've come across the seas, we've boundless plains to share."

Are you addressing me. Icy?

I do stand up to the anthem, also I can not sing, I can speak the words.

And no, I don't live in a community of likeminded people, but Like someone else said, I am entitled to my opinion. You don't have to agree with me.
