Internet facts and myths

FACT

1. Internet data flow speed is limited to the speed of the slowest link between source to destination, regardless of the transport medium used.

(Be that copper, optic fibre, wireless or even wet string)

MYTH

Propagation of signal using Optic Fibre is faster than propagation of signal using copper.

(Propagation in both mediums is 66% plus or minus 5% of the speed of light in a vacuum)

Is this what you are referring to cats?  Have you got the facts around the wrong way?

Open mind to more hybrid possibilities

Mr Turnbull said he would review NBN Co's charter, instructing it to seek to use existing fibre infrastructure such as hospital, school and utilities' networks where possible.

"We are very alert to that. At least one state government has offered their extensive fibre network for its use."

Andrew Findlay, managing director of Vertel, a company that operates hybrid fibre-microwave broadband networks on behalf of groups such as schools and health providers, told IT Pro there is much existing infrastructure that should be incorporated into the NBN, but his company had not been consulted by representatives of the NBN Co. NBN Co has previously said it was charged by the Federal Government with rolling out fibre, not canvassing existing technologies.

He said hospitals in regional health alliances in Victoria, for example, already had use of between 25 and 100 megabits per-second service, up from 2 to 8Mbps with copper and for the same price. He said various utilities also had suitable infrastructure to add to the NBN.

"Powerlink, Queensland Rail, RailCorp, Vic Track โ€“ they have extensive fibre networks โ€“ for signalling and telemetry.

"We have a measurement tool โ€“ we map the networks โ€“ contrary to public opinion, there is a lot of fibre out there already owned by government departments. There would be a very good business case to reuse and get service providers like us and others to leverage that, Mr Findlay said.

That would be part of the conversation...

it is in fact a FACT then.

So there is plenty of other network around... not all hospitals, uni's , schools, and businesses are running at snails pace... they ALREADY have fast internet....

Victoria has offered to use it's network to help out.. the NBN refused.

they want to shut down all other competition..

the only reason that little school is making it's own choice now is because it can. BUT at the end of the NBN the only choice you will have is NBN.

I used a Visual Display Unit, connected to a huge mainframe computer (took up a whole big room) in the late 1970's.

Freaki is probably outside banging her head on a brick wall.:-)

Malcolm Turnbull explains Coalition NBN plan

Updated Sun Apr 14, 2013 11:11am AEST

ALAN KOHLER: But the other thing you've introduced in your policy is the idea of co-funding ...

MALCOLM TURNBULL: Mmm, that's right.

ALAN KOHLER: ... the last bit. How does that work? Does somebody then become a shareholder in that bit of the NBN, if they're a company or a hospital or whatever it might be, or a local government, is that how - will they be equity holders in the NBN?

MALCOLM TURNBULL: Well, you just have to be very flexible about it. But, you see, the problem at the moment - I mean, the point we're really trying to make there, Alan , is more one of principle. At the moment, the NBN Co is not open to doing anything like that. The NBN Co is not interested in cooperation.

The Victorian Government's been to the NBN Co and said, "We have got this massive fibre network right through Victoria." Every school in Victoria is connected to fibre. They've got a huge fibre network. They said, "Can't we do a deal? Isn't there some way we can cooperate?" And the NBN Co said, "Nup, we're not interested in that. We're just going to overbuild everybody." Now, there's a lot of a more collaborative ...

ALAN KOHLER: Has the advantage of simplicity. I mean, you're ...

MALCOLM TURNBULL: It has the advantage of simplicity if you've got an unlimited pocketbook, which is their attitude.

ALAN KOHLER: But you've got a lot of things to work out - that bit, the Telstra thing and you've also got to work out ...

Care to comment on the most basic fundamental speed limitation of the internet?

1. Internet data flow speed is limited to the speed of the slowest link between source to destination, regardless of the transport medium used.

Desperado, or what!

Still trying to bait someone into arguing an irrelevant point days later.

Re: Internet facts and myths

FACT

Apparently Victoria already hooked up all of its schools and universities, hospitals and the like with fibre..

The NBN is forcing it all to be shut down and moved onto their network... at a HUGE cost to the taxpayer.

I heard this on the radio today...

would love to know more about this if anyone has more details.

No, Cat you should search for more info before believing everything you read.

Some parts are getting NBN here... in fact the first part of the NBN is under construction. Apparently it is a new estate... in fact 2 new estates...

BUT.. I don't get the hype..

I looked at the line back to Brisbane and most of the NBN is missing still..

What do you mean by looking back to Brisbane?

You can't see the transit network.

The first bit being built is seaside... there is no connecting fibre to anywhere... so what is the benefit???

All over the news is that Bundaberg starts construction in the next week or two... or something like that... BUT there is no fiber out to the rest of the country so why are they starting here???

There is fibre out to the rest of the country. There has been for years.

How is it going to make anyone go faster when there is a 100 lane hwy that is going to connect to a two lane hwy???

What are you talking about?

They don't just connect to nothing. It depends on the sites you visit how fast or slow they will react. ABC for example is very good. ebay as we all know is not the world's fastest site.

Overseas destinations are slower than Aus sites downloading but fast when uploading to.

More and more companies are locating servers and mirrors in Australia so more and more we don't need to rely on OS servers for everything.  We also have dark fibre to come online and more under construction/in planning.  So it's speeding up all the time.

It would pay to listen to the reasons for not using other bits of network where they don't. NBN Co will use other bits of networks where they are compatible. They do not plan on using the copper bits and pieces that don't fit the overall network plan, for very good reason.
