e.g. say Beethoven, Bach. Picasso
Is it just a matter of opinion what constitue as beauty? Is it a majority decides.
Is beauty universal? Is there an objective way of deciding beauty?
How do YOU decide what beauty is?

If I find something beautiful, it is beauty?
I dont know about it being universal.

@joz*garage wrote:Not everybody will find Beethoven, Bach. 's music or Picasso's art beautiful
so in that context, no... beauty is not universal
there are individual tastes when it comes to that
i do believe there is universal beauty though, something that everybody finds beautiful
scenes in nature for example
who can not behold a beautiful sunset?
Sunset. I'm rather ambivalent about it.

I do think the perception of beauty is ingrained in our DNA. Even babies can determine beauty before they're influenced by culture.

No they can't. Don't confuse 'pleasing' with 'beauty'
If it's not pleasant, a baby will let you know

well if you put it that way
a deranged evil mind can find something of beauty
even with animals, if they didnt find the opposite sex attractive they wouldnt reproduce

Bob, I think Babies respond to symmetry. They also respond to black and white geometrical shapes. The brain need to develop, in order to take in complex images.
As we get older, humans often find beauty in things that are not symmetrical. So, that blows out the DNA baby theory. IMHO>
I think beauty is subjective, and differs not only from culture to culture, but also from one era to the next, as well as from each individual.
I went to the Los Angeles museum of art a few days ago. There was an impressionist display there(on tour). Van Gogh, Kandinsky, etc. I wouldn't hang a lot of those paintings on my own walls. We actually got into a discussion about WHO decides what is "great" art? We toured the rest of the museum, and saw quite an eclectic assortment of art pieces. Some I loved, some I actually hated.
While many of us might agree that a sunset, or sunrise is beautiful, others might just shrug and say, eh, I'd rather see the moon and stars.
