From what I've read it seems you responded to his vile sexist attack with a subtle racist one.

Just my observation.

Was this at work or someone's home?

I then said "This is my Country, my culture which is a martrarchal culture which means we treat women with respect"

Yep it was racist.

He may have been rude but he didn't mention his culture or country in his comments to you so why did you bring it up? If you had just said "You should treat me and the other women here with respect" then it would have said the same thing without suggesting his culture is the reason he was so rude.

As an aside, I don't believe it is rude to speak to others in another language if your dual language is something other than English. My parents naturally speak Italian when they meet up with other Italians as this is the most instinctive for them.

Maybe you don't think that its rude to speak in another language but I believe it is when there are other people who are then cut out of the conversation especially when those people were speaking first.

In the context in which you said it, it definitely has implied racial undertones. Rather than addressing his rudeness and disrespect as an individual, your rebuttal was almost as rude as him.

I don't think anyone here is disputing the fact that what he did is rude.  But there was no need for the "In my country" remark.

I would of walked away when he started ranting and raving, there is no point in trying to reason with an angry person

re speaking in another language in the presence of others who dont understand it, personally, it does not bother me but I would never do that because I would consider that.....well...rude.

Bob, of course I don't believe in anything I say.

from there;

Racist attitudes and beliefs are misconceptions about people based on perceived racial lines and are often founded on the fear of difference, including differences in customs, values, religion, physical appearance and ways of living and viewing the world. This includes negative attitudes towards the use of different languages, 'foreign' accents or the use of non-standard variations of a dominant community language. [1]
