And why would Barry O'Farrell listen?

During his campaign he made a promise to the Shooters Party (to which this idiot belongs) to allow hunting in our National Parks in return for their support to sell off electricity in the state. Trial hunting began this month in 12 Parks across the state.

One major difference between hunting deer and elephants would be that deer meat is edible.

the cruelty and corruption of the elephant hunt

Letters to the Editor

I began hunting as soon as I was old enough to use a rifle. But the photo of Robert Borsak gloating over the body of an elephant he shot in Zimbabwe fills me with disgust ("Macdonald's game council thrill killer", July 21).

Zimbabwe is one of few African countries to allow this practice. People typically pay about $US20,000-$26,000 ($25,000-$32,000) for this privilege. Bulls are more expensive, presumably because of their tusks. Where does this money go? Here is a hint.

The BBC reported a decade ago that the government of Robert Mugabe earned US$2.5 million by selling 20 tonnes of elephant tusks, although the ivory trade had been banned. Zimbabwe lies about its elephant population to get around the ban. This practice is probably greater today.

As the economy collapsed, the Zimbabwean Army, the key to Mugabe's survival, cancelled all contracts to supply beef. The Zimbabwean Conservation Task Force reports soldiers have complained the only meat they are given is from elephants. So in addition to the immense pleasure Borsak apparently feels in the senseless destruction of a great creature, he can also take pride in doing his bit to keep Africa's worst despot in power.

deers are usually a pest. they are a pest here and there are too much of them where i come from.

they need to be hunted in germany because there are no wolfes around anymore.

when the population pressure becomes too high because there are no wolfes to eat them the deer start eating the bark of the trees which can do extensive damage to the woods. trees in germany grow slowly, they are not wattles that re-grow in a few years time, also the bark is not shed and does not grow back. deers also invade gardens to eat tulip buds, the bark of fruit trees and other plants.

do something for the invironment and eat a deer. put the meat in red wine or buttermilk for 3 days to get the "wild" taste out, then roast it with onions, juniper berries, thyme and bay leaves.

Thank you for the recipe.....I will keep it for the next time I go into a National Park and kill or wound a deer with a crossbow or bow and arrow.

I asked a question and I stated a fact.I was not aware that an opinion was required.

however,

My opinion? About what? The opportunity for political point scoring or the treatment of animals?

Would you prefer a subjective, objective or emotional opinion.

Here are the facts that I know.

A man shot an elephant.

It was legal for him to do so.

What I don't know is if the elephant suffered. Nor do I know if the carcass was left to rot and thus wasted or if the meat was used to feed people.

People kill animals, it's what they do.

People abuse animals, it's what they do.

People hunt many animals in the name of "sport".

They hunt deer and stags for the glory of a double 6 pointer.

They hunt foxes and then smear the blood onto their faces following their first kill.

They beat and abuse horses in the name of horseracing and other equestrian events.

Apparently Greyhound racing isn't all that much fun for the animals either.

They eat fully formed chickens not yet hatched from their shells.

They practise their golf shots in many suburban back yards with cane toads.

They stun a frog with a baseball bat and then slice the skin around it's neck whilst it's heart is still beating and then peel the skin from that frog whilst it is still alive - because fresh frog meat attracts a higher price than dead frog meat.

They take a fish from a fish tank and slice pieces from it's flesh for a customer's order at their sushi bar and then return that fish to the tank whilst it is still alive until the next customer comes in.

They catch lobsters, and twist their heads off to seperate the head from the body, whilst the body contracts and squeezes the hand holding it, Then they cut down the sides of the shell on it's tummy and remove the still pulsing flesh, slice it (yes it is still pulsing and moving) and then placed on a plate with the flesh still pulsing and the eyes still bulging and the feelers and legs still moving.

They place live mud crabs into freezers, and stand beside those freezers whilst the crabs claw at the styrofoam boxes they are contained in and listen to their screams until they finally fall asleep.

They slice open the abdomen of LIVE sturgeon fish in order to remove the roe so that people can have fresh caviar.

I guess we can also include the regular fisherman amongst this list as well, who catches and kills fish, or maybe get a kiss and thrown back.

People remove animals from their natural environment and place them into captivity.

So my opinion about this particular thread and the subsequent posts? It's bad enough that human beings, who are supposedly capable of empathy and emotion, treat animals in ways such as above and with so little respect, without useing them as a subject for political point scoring. Furthermore, I doubt that very few people have not participated in or facilitated in the continuation of at least one of the practises above, yet we are prepared to condemn one particular man because he happens to be a politician.
