It must be melbourne Cup Day soon, mustn't it?
You know, that horse race that "stops a nation"?
I wonder how many people are going to frock up for that day, buy a new hat, attend some function or place a bet on a horse or buy a ticket in a sweepstake etc?
But I guess that's ok, cos I'm sure those horses chose that lifestyle, I'm sure those horses really enjoy the training and preparation etc, and hey, it must be ok, cos they're still breathing after the race, so they might even get to do it all over again next year. How lucky are they, eh?

That reminds me. We need a Melbourne Cup sweep!

Maybe you don't have one.
I asked a question and I stated a fact.I was not aware that an opinion was required.
however,
My opinion? About what? The opportunity for political point scoring or the treatment of animals?
Would you prefer a subjective, objective or emotional opinion.
Here are the facts that I know.
A man shot an elephant.
It was legal for him to do so.
What I don't know is if the elephant suffered. Nor do I know if the carcass was left to rot and thus wasted or if the meat was used to feed people.
People kill animals, it's what they do.
People abuse animals, it's what they do.
People hunt many animals in the name of "sport".
They hunt deer and stags for the glory of a double 6 pointer.
They hunt foxes and then smear the blood onto their faces following their first kill.
They beat and abuse horses in the name of horseracing and other equestrian events.
Apparently Greyhound racing isn't all that much fun for the animals either.
They eat fully formed chickens not yet hatched from their shells.
They practise their golf shots in many suburban back yards with cane toads.
They stun a frog with a baseball bat and then slice the skin around it's neck whilst it's heart is still beating and then peel the skin from that frog whilst it is still alive - because fresh frog meat attracts a higher price than dead frog meat.
They take a fish from a fish tank and slice pieces from it's flesh for a customer's order at their sushi bar and then return that fish to the tank whilst it is still alive until the next customer comes in.
They catch lobsters, and twist their heads off to seperate the head from the body, whilst the body contracts and squeezes the hand holding it, Then they cut down the sides of the shell on it's tummy and remove the still pulsing flesh, slice it (yes it is still pulsing and moving) and then placed on a plate with the flesh still pulsing and the eyes still bulging and the feelers and legs still moving.
They place live mud crabs into freezers, and stand beside those freezers whilst the crabs claw at the styrofoam boxes they are contained in and listen to their screams until they finally fall asleep.
They slice open the abdomen of LIVE sturgeon fish in order to remove the roe so that people can have fresh caviar.
I guess we can also include the regular fisherman amongst this list as well, who catches and kills fish, or maybe get a kiss and thrown back.
People remove animals from their natural environment and place them into captivity.
So my opinion about this particular thread and the subsequent posts? It's bad enough that human beings, who are supposedly capable of empathy and emotion, treat animals in ways such as above and with so little respect, without useing them as a subject for political point scoring. Furthermore, I doubt that very few people have not participated in or facilitated in the continuation of at least one of the practises above, yet we are prepared to condemn one particular man because he happens to be a politician.
i doubt anyone here has shot an elephant. i know i havent, so i feel free to condemn this git.

Yes Crikey, many unknowingly support animal cruelty.
.
The horse racing industry in Australia is well documented as a cruel 'sport'.
25,000 thoroughbred race horses are slaughtered each year because they weren't winners.
Even winners are rarely left to live out the rest of their lives in paddocks unless in stud.
Training involves incredible suffering too. Bleeding ulcers because of stress. Blood in the windpipe and lungs following a race.
Their only value to the industry is the financial returns.
Maybe those who like to bet on races would be less likely to support the industry if they knew what went on behindthe scenes.
....then again, perhaps they don't care.
Check out Animals Australia site.
Think about this when you have your flutter.

If we dont care what happens to the Animals in the wild, we will not be able to complain when they are all gone and all we can show our childen is a photo in a book.
I guess some people just dont care, so glad many do.

I'm quite happy to condemn this person and not for political point scoring but because of his sickening and arrogant
practices. This thread is not about all the other cruelties imposed on animals though I acknowledge your
point, but many of these practices you mention have their own very vocal dissidents, fortunately.
He is a man of influence and being a politician one would hope has moral integrity, but in my view
has absolutely none.

Yes Bright nothing to do with Politics at all. I said in post 3 I was surprised at a Australian killing this Elephant.
Some people have their on agenda, I was just asking if this was true as you cant believe every thing on FB

Any hunting IMO is disgusting. Don't care what sort it is. Last night I had to turn off a programe I has been watching because they were hunting down wild goats. Not the goats problem some idiot had introduced them into a declared nature reserve. Why not trap and relocate?

How about when people allow domestic pets to roam unrestricted, free to hunt, torture and kill other animals and native wildlife?
