We use our tank water for washing clothes, watering he garden but never for drinking or cooking  .... We buy botted water for drinking 'cause the town water tastes disgusting

Is rainwater safe to drink?

Yes, if you catch it directly from the sky and in a small clean container, not stored.

But even then the water contains whatever particles it catches on the way down.

(I wouldn't be drinking rain water in some parts of Bali at the moment)

I know what you mean. When I was visiting Mackay back when the had a severe drought, we were on bore water. To me, the city dweller, it was horrible.

But then, being thirsty is pretty bad too, I believe.
